The Kawasaki Z125 Pro was introduced in 2017 to compete in the mini-moto market against the likes of the ever-popular Honda Grom. The bike has 12-inch wheels, a 15-horsepower liquid-cooled engine, and Z series styling that echoes the larger Z900 and Z1000. Kawasaki calls the bike…

“A nimble streetfighter designed to defy what a lightweight motorcycle can be…”

Reviewers have largely agreed that the Z125 Pro packs a powerful amount of fun into a small package. What’s more, the 125cc Kawasaki boasts fuel economy north of 80 mpg — meaning a 160-mile range on the 2-gallon tank! — and an MSRP of less than $3200.

That said, you also have to think about insurance coverage. While the Z125 Pro isn’t as expensive to insure as larger Z-series brethren like the Z1000, it can still be pricey, as the bike is popular among new riders — meaning more claims and corresponding insurance rates. For this reason, it’s doubly important to compare rates from multiple companies, or else you risk paying way too much.

Kawasaki Z125 History and Specs

The Kawasaki Z125 Pro was introduced in 2017 as the smallest in the Z-series of bikes, which includes fire-breathers such as the Z1000. The Z125 shares the styling of the bigger bikes in a much smaller package, which includes 12-inch wheels, a 125cc fuel-injected single cylinder engine, and a 4-speed manual transmission.

The bike is slightly taller and narrower than the Grom, with a half-gallon more fuel capacity, slightly lower list price, and some have praised the little Kawa for better handling. Says Motorcycle:

“The dyno numbers further prove the Honda and the Kawi are closely aligned. They weigh practically the same at 225 lbs, make similar power, and are within $200 of each other.”

Both bikes also have a top speed of around 63 mph. Some reviewers have claimed the Z125 feels like it has more low-end grunt and torque, which may be due to gearing differences, as the bikes make almost the same power at the rear wheel.

Keeping Your Premiums Low

Considering that it could cost $100-$900 annually to insure your Z125, it’s smart to take a few steps to keep your premiums as low as possible.

  • Good Student Discount: The Z125 has become a popular bike among students. Unlike a scooter, it’s a real motorcycle with a clutch, manual transmission, and fun handling characteristics. Most every insurer worth their salt will provide an insurance discount for maintaining a good GPA, typically of 3.5 or higher. Ask your insurer for specifics.
  • Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Basic Rider Course: We can’t recommend this course enough to beginner and veteran riders alike. Not only will you learn and practice skills that could save your life, most insurers provide a 15% discount for completion of the course.
