The KTM RC 390 is the sport bike version of the beloved 390 Duke. While the bikes share the same 44-hp liquid-cooled engine, the RC 390 has a stiffer trellis frame with steeper steering head angle and shorter wheelbase. The racing pedigree of the bike is undeniable, as the RC 390 is being raced in MotoGP junior events across the globe. In the States, the bike competes with other lightweight sport bikes like the Honda CBR500 and Kawasaki Ninja 400.

While the RC 390 certainly doesn’t cost as much as a liter-class sport bike, some companies place the bike in the “performance bike” or “super sport” insurance bracket, which makes for expensive rates. For this reason, it’s crucial to compare quotes from multiple insurers.

The RC 390’s naked sibling, the 390 Duke, was developed jointly between KTM and one of the largest motorcycle manufacturers in the world, Bajaj, which is based in India. The bike debuted in 2012, went on sale stateside in 2015, and the RC 390 shortly after.

The KTM 390 models share the same 44-horsepower liquid-cooled engine, but the RC 390 is designed for the track with a one-piece aluminum trellis frame and much more aggressive geometry. A pure racing version, the RC 390 Cup, is used in various series around the world, most notably the MotoGP Junior Cup.

RC 390 Coverage Recommendations

As you probably know, most states will not allow a motorcycle to be registered unless it the owner carries a minimum amount of liability coverage — an amount that varies from state to state. If you want the absolute cheapest coverage possible, you can insure your RC to your state’s minimum liability and nothing more.

However, liability-only coverage is not available if you financed your bike, as banks and finance companies require full coverage on the bikes they finance. What’s more, collision and comprehensive (generally referred to as “full coverage” when purchased together) is highly recommend for the RC 390, as the fairings of modern sport bikes are incredibly expensive to repair and replace after even the most minor accident.
