Yamaha SX225 Cafe Racer by Jowo Kustom

Yamaha SX225 Cafe Racer

Jowo Kustom has quickly become one of our favorite workshops operating out of Indonesia — a custom culture hotbed. Founder Anes Marse credits many of the country’s other talented craftsmen for influencing him to “build bikes as an art of the soul.”

One of the most popular platforms in Indonesia is the Yamaha SX225, aka the Scorpio 225. The previous Jowo Kustom build we featured was a Yamaha Scorpio tracker. Now Anes and the crew are back with a Scorpio 225 cafe racer inspired by none other than ex-BMW Motorrad designer Sylvain Bernero, aka Holographic Hammer.

Below, we get the full story on this SX225 “neo cafe racer.”

Yamaha Scorpio Cafe Racer: Builder Interview

Please tell us a bit about yourself, your history with motorcycles, and your workshop.

First, my name is Yohanes Marse, but my friends called me Anes. My workshop has been operating since 2014 as custom culture workshop. I saw the scene of custom culture in Indonesia was spreading and it has grown so well. Many talented local crafters have influenced me to build motorcycles as an art of soul. I had two partners and some additional partners who always help me with my builds, a good team.

Why was this bike built?

This is a customer project. I love a simply, clean, but catchy concept. So I try to put those ingredients into the bike. And thanks full to my customer that he agreed with it. Then we began to realize it.

What was the design concept and what influenced the build?

It was a neo-caferacer concept. I tried to make it as simple as possible. This time Holographic Hammer has influenced the bike built.

What custom work was done to the bike?

Every workshop has a different style and taste. My style was simple, light, clean and un-common. I cut the subframe and replaced it with new one. Swing arm, hornet, rear & front hub, ss exhaust system, they are fully handmade. I used Yamaha RX 100 gas tank. The inner spring of upside down forks was cut 15cm length, so it has a lower riding position, combine with 36cm rear shock breaker.

How would you classify this bike?

A simply clean cafe racer.

Was there anything done during this build that you are particularly proud of?

This is our latest built. Fresh from the oven. So impressing me to make it real from sketch. Especially rear and front hub that take a lot of time to made it. But thank God it’s done. And don’t forget also the Yamaha RX 100 gas tank, which is rare enough to find here. But now everything was complete and the bike was done.

  1. I would really like to know how bike builders are getting all that tire on these bikes, I have a bone stock 76 Kawasaki kz400 with 18X3.50 front and rear wheels but I’d much rather get tires as shown in your Yamaha SX225. What is it that I’m missing, would I need to buy a smaller diameter set of wheels? Any help would be awesome thank you
