The Kawasaki Ninja 250R is the company’s entry-level sport bike. Also known simply as the Ninja 250, the bike was first introduced in the 1980s and remained largely unchanged for decades. In 2008, the bike was subjected to an extensive redesign and has since been succeeded by the Ninja 300 in some markets.

The Ninja name is synonymous with high-performance street bikes. While this 250cc model is not nearly as expensive to insure as some of the larger Ninja siblings, it pays to do your homework and compare rates.

Most national insurers offer Ninja 250 insurance — however, rates can vary widely from company to company. For instance, here is a true-life example from a user from Texas, 37 years old, new rider, no tickets, who was getting quotes for liability and full coverage on his Ninja 250R:

  • GEICO: $167/month
  • All State: $100/month
  • State Farm: $42/month
  • Dairyland: $37.50/month
  • Progressive: $23/month

Other users have reported rates of $15-$25 per month.

Let’s have a look at the history of the Ninja 250R, a few of the types of insurance coverages that you may need, and a few ways that you can keep your insurance costs down.

A Brief History of the Ninja 250R

The original Ninja 250 — aka the EX250 — first reaches North American shores in 1986-1987. The bikes came with an air-cooled, counter-balanced 248cc straight twin and 6-speed transmission. The littlest Ninja was good for a quarter mile of 14.6 to 15.4 seconds and a top speed of 94 mph.

In 2008, the Ninja 250R was extensively redesigned. Cosmetic updates brought the styling into the 2000s, and though the new bike was down slightly in peak horsepower from its predecessor, the new Ninja 250R boasted a 30% increase in midrange power, making the bike much easier to ride.

Kawasaki Ninja 250 Coverage Recommendations

Nearly all states require insurance coverage for motorcycles. At minimum, a liability policy is typically required. These policies don’t cover the bike, just any damages in case you are at fault in an accident. If you finance your Ninja, your lender will typically require you to carry more coverage than the state minimums. The risk of having to pay for repairs out-of-pocket and bank requirements are why all riders should have more coverage than a simple liability policy. The coverage you may need include collision, comprehensive, and uninsured motorist. This is of particular importance for a sport bike like the Ninja, whose fairings can be incredibly expensive to replace in the event of even a minor drop.

Ninja 250R Insurance Rates

Certain factors affect motorcycle insurance premiums. These include:

  • Make and model of bike
  • Driving record
  • Age of rider
  • State you live in
  • Credit score

We have seen Ninja 250R insurance rates as low as $100 per year. However, this is typically for liability coverage only — not collision or comprehensive. Other users have reported rates ranging from $280 to $2000 per year.  With these factors in mind, there are ways you can lower your premiums.
