Italian Unobtanium: 4-km 1976 Ducati 900 Super Sport!

Ducati 900SS 1976For Sale via Moto Borgotaro: “Non Omologato” Ducati 900 SS with just 4 kilometers!

In 1975, Ducati introduced the original 900 Super Sport (SS), destined to become one of the most iconic sport bikes in motoring history. The 864cc square-case 90-degree twin boasted some 80 horsepower, and the bike was built for the track as much as the street.

“Ducati’s original 900 Super Sport was one of the most single-minded sporting superbikes that ever devoured an innocent public road. It was essentially a street-legal production racer: fast, raw and uncompromising. It handled and slopped brilliantly, looked and sounded gorgeous, and was a match for anything on road or track.” -Roland Brown, Fast Bikes

Ducati 900 SSThe SS series grew out of Ducati’s victory at the 1972 Imola 200, when factory pilots Paul Smart and Bruno Spaggiari took the top two spots on the podium over a fleet of factory racers. The Bologna factory celebrated their victory with a small batch of road-legal replicas, which led to the 750 Super Sport and later the 900 Super Sport.

Ducati 900 SSOur friend Peter Boggia of Moto Borgotaro has an affinity for locating the rarest, most desirable motorbikes on the planet. He’s done it again with this ’76 Ducati 900 SS, which has just 4 original kilometers on the clock! Not only that, but this is an ultra-rare “Non Omologato” model — these non-homologated early 900 SS models featured 32mm carburetors, Lafranconi exhausts, and unique stampings on the engine and frame.

Ducati 900 SSThis “unobtanium” Duc is up for auction at Bring a Trailer (BaT) — auction link here — and includes a letter of verification from no less than Ian Falloon, included below! Also included are a complete original tool kit, copy of a letter from the selling dealer from 1976, and the original owners manual.

We hear the top 3 bidders will receive a poster of the bike, as seen below.

If you have deep enough pockets to own this piece of unobtainium motorcycling history, here’s the link to the auction:

DUCATI 900 SS 1976
Engine Number: DM900 086955 Frame Number: DM860SS 086566

The Ducati 900 Super Sport under examination here is one of the earliest examples produced of the rare 1976 Non Omologato 900 SS. Both the engine and frame numbers indicate this example was probably built in September 1976. The original mileage of only 4 kilometers means this is new and unused and it makes this motorcycle unique.

Ducati 900 SS

This 1976 Non Omologato Ducati 900 SS was originally bought by Trevor Kupsch of Adelaide, South Australia. Kupsch traded a Triumph on the 900 SS with Ron Angel Holdings in Melbourne and actually bought two identical bikes at the time. At that stage Ron Angel was the Ducati distributor for Victoria and South Australia. The other 900 SS was engine number 086863, frame number 086569. This was also Non Omologato and both had a VIN plate dated 10/76. Both bikes were delivered in early 1977 and were never commissioned for use. In 1979 Mr Kupsch bought two black and gold 900 SSs, and later in 1979 a 900 MHR. All five bikes remained in an original state inside his house until 2013 when the collection was sold. This particular example has been in at least one other collection in Australia before being purchased by Peter Boggia in 2024.

Overall assessment:
The engine and frame number and known history confirm this is a genuine Non Omologato 1976 Ducati 900 SS. It is also unquestionably brand new and never used and is undoubtedly a unique example.
