First introduced back in 2002 to North America, the Yamaha FJR1300 puts the “sport” in sport touring. The 1298cc currently makes 144 hp, which means the mighty FJR is blisteringly fast for such a refined, comfortable long-range machine. No wonder the bike has won over legions of fans, with more than 100,000 sold since its introduction.

Of course, such blinding performance can come at a cost: high insurance rates. While the FJR shouldn’t cost as much to insure as a liter-class superbike like the YZF-R1, the rates can be quite expensive if you don’t make sure to shop around.

Yamaha FJR1300 Insurance Rates

Since rates vary widely between riders and locales, it’s hard to know what you should be paying. In order to give you an idea of what to expect, we collected actual rates from a variety of real FJR owners.

As you can see, rates vary widely not only from rider to rider, but from one company to the next. As one veteran member of the FJR Forum states:

“There are many factors used in determining how a insurance company establishes a rate/quote, way to many to mention here, only a few are: # of past claims/accidents, state in which you live, your age, sex, experience, # moving violations, type and extent of coverage/limits etc. etc.”

Moreover, it seems some insurers classify the FJR as a sport bike, while others classify it as a touring machine. This only emphasizes the importance of comparing quotes and policies from several companies before you buy. Fortunately, we can help. Enter your zip code to get started.

Yamaha FJR1300:  Model History

Yamaha FJR1300 Insurance

The FJR1300 arrived on US shores in 2002 as a 2003 model, garnering broad acclaim in the motoring media for its blend of power, speed, comfort, and quality. In 2006, a Gen-II version appeared in both North America and Europe, featuring a broad array of improvements, which included standard ABS and UBS (Yamaha’s Unified Braking System).

The Gen-III FJR1300 appeared in 2013. Not only was the frontal bodywork completely new, but the new bike boasted Yamaha’s YCC-T ride-by-wire throttle system, multiple drive modes, integrated traction control, cruise control, and more. Heated grips were also standard.

The FJR1300ES adds inverted forks and electronically-adjustable suspension to the mix, and more than 20 years since its inception, the FJR1300 continues to receive positive reviews:

“The Yamaha FJR has maintained its position among the most popular sport touring motorcycles virtually from the time it was introduced over 20 years ago in 2001. In the years since, improvements have been made but fundamental FJR design principles have remained the same. The FJR simply is a nearly perfect example of what a sport touring motorcycle should be – sport-oriented capability balanced with essential touring features.” —American Sport Touring

Coverage Recommendations: Yamaha FJR

Yamaha FJR1300 Insurance

While liability-only coverage may be the most affordable option, it’s best to carry as much coverage as you can afford. Liability only covers your liability for damages to other people and property. It does not cover you and your bike in the event of a collision, theft, act of God, or other mishap. For that reason, we strongly encourage you to carry full coverage, which includes Collision and Comprehensive coverage.

What’s more, according to the Insurance Information Institute, more than 12.5% of US drivers are uninsured — that’s 1 in 8 motorists! For that reason, Uninsured Motorist coverage is another consideration. Here’s a direct quote from an FJR Forum member who works in the claims department of a major insurer:

“Let me give you some sound advice. Carry insurance to protect yourself from what others will do to you; not what you will do to them. Make sure you carry Bodily Injury Uninsured and Underinsured Motorist Coverage. If you get injured and it is someone else’s fault you may be able to make an uninsured or underinsured claim with your insurance company.”

While all this coverage can get expensive, you can usually find an affordable full coverage policy if you shop around a bit. Fortunately, we make that easy. Enter your zip code to start comparing rates and policies in your area.
