Superbikes like the Yamaha R1 have to be some of the most thrilling machines in the world, slamming adrenaline through all of your senses. It’s hard to imagine anything more exciting, except maybe top-fuel dragsters and modern fighter jets.

Unfortunately, that power and speed work against you when you are shopping for insurance coverage. Superbike insurance can be expensive if you find a policy. Given that the Yamaha YZF-R1–or Yamaha R1 if you prefer–is one of the quickest bikes on the market, it can be especially difficult to find affordable coverage. Fortunately, we can help.

A Brief History of the Yamaha R1

The Yamaha YZF-R1 was introduced for the 1998 model year after Yamaha revised its Genesis engine to be more compact and powerful. The redesigned engine was the first to use the ”stacked gearbox,” a design where the gearbox input shaft rides above and parallel to the gearbox output shaft. The concept was revolutionary and most manufacturers followed suit within a few model years.

The compact engine was significantly shorter and allowed Yamaha to shorten the wheelbase. The engine’s weight could then be placed within the frame to improve handling through a better center of gravity. The swingarm was lengthened, fork angle became steeper, and improved aerodynamics helped to create an exceptional track bike. The early bikes featured four Kehin CV carbs and a EXUP exhaust valve helped the bike to reach its advertised 140 bhp. The EXUP valve also improved torque at all revs, so the bike took off like a rocket. The first bikes had a compression ratio of 11.8:1, a six-speed transmission, and a multi-plate clutch.

The current Yamaha R1 is powered by a fuel-injected 998 cc engine with a bore of 79.0 mm and a stroke of 50.9 mm. It has a 13:1 compression ratio and offers 197 bhp (at the crankshaft) and 73.2 lb-ft of torque. Yamaha claims that the R1 has a top speed of 176.7 mph, a 0-60 time of just 2.6 seconds, and will finish the quarter mile in 10.31 seconds at a speed of 148.12 mph.
