Introduced in 2012, the Honda CRF250L was a liquid-cooled four-stroke dual-sport motorcycle that quickly earned a reputation as a very solid performer as both a weekday commuter and weekend trail bike:
“If you want a lightweight dual sport trail bike that can handle a short commute in the week and then head into the countryside on green lanes at the weekend – the Honda CRF250L is it.” –MCN
The 250cc dual-purpose machine made 23 hp, had a top speed of 86 mph, and a range of 150 miles — returning 90 mpg! It was never the cheapest 250 on the market, but arguably the best.
As you know, insurance is a major part of the cost of owning a motorcycle. Fortunately, dual-sport motorcycles like the CRF are typically much more affordable to insure than sport bikes or even cruisers. That said, rates tend to vary greatly from one insurer to the next — even for the same rider and bike — so it’s important to compare policies / rates from multiple insurers. We can help!
Honda CRF250 Insurance Rates
Premiums vary widely based on age, location, riding / driving history, marital status, credit, deductible, coverage limits, and more. That means it’s nearly impossible to estimate what your rate should be without getting an actual quote from an insurer. That said, we surveyed a range of real CRF250L owners to give you an idea of what to expect:
- Male, NE, 51, Full Coverage: $75 / year
- Male, MD, 39, Full Coverage: $120 / year
- Male, TN, 31, Full Coverage: $300 / year
- Male, MO, Age N/A, Full Coverage: $165 / year
- Male, NJ, Age N/A, Full Coverage: $200 / year
As you can see, rates vary widely from rider to rider, some owners reported saving as much as $100 per year by switching insurers. So it pays to compare rates from several different companies.

Brief History: Honda CRF250L / CRF250 Rally
The spiritual ancestor of the CRF250 is the air-cooled XR250L introduced in 1991. However, the CRF is much more advanced, boasting a liquid-cooled DOHC single-cylinder engine, 43mm upside-down forks, front and rear disc brakes, and more.
“It’s not often that a sub 25hp motorbike gets us excited, but this is a real world machine, that will give anyone with the slightest inclination for off-road a bike that will deliver performance and classic days out for years.” -MCN
In 2017, Honda introduced the CRF250LA (with ABS brakes) and the CRF250 Rally, with a larger fuel tank, Dakar-style bodywork, handguards, skidplate, and greater suspension travel — a bike inspired by Honda’s CRF450 Dakar Rally racer.
In 2021, the CRF250 was replaced with the CRF300L and CRF300 Rally. In addition to a 36cc boost to 286cc, these bikes feature different front end geometry and lighter overall weight.
Coverage Recommendations
In most US states, you’re required to carry a minimum amount of liability coverage. Opting for a liability-only policy — aka Basic Coverage — is often the cheapest option, but not the best. After all, liability only covers you for injuries and/or property damage sustained by third parties in an accident.
Since insuring a CRF250 is relatively affordable compared to many other bikes, we encourage you to consider a Full Coverage policy, which includes Comprehensive and Collision coverage. What’s more, if you’re financing your CRF, your lender will require you to carry this level of coverage.
