In 2019, the Indian FTR 1200 appeared as a V-twin production street tracker inspired by the company’s scratch-built FTR 750 race bike, a dominant force in American Flat Track. Cycle World went so far as to say the FTR (Flat Track Racer) heralded a new era for American street standards.

The 1203cc liquid-cooled V-twin makes a very stout 120 horsepower and 87 pound-feet of torque, and handling has only improved with the transition to twin 17-inch wheels with the 2022 models. However, will all of this performance comes a downside: insurance rates. Unfortunately, some FTR owners have found the bike to be more expensive to insure than expected.

Indian FTR:  Model History

The original FTR 1200 appeared in 2019, inspired by Indian’s scratch-built FTR 750 flat tracker, which would remain the dominant machine in American Flat Track (AFT) until regulation changes removed it from competition ahead of the 2025 season.

The FTR 1200 has largely been hailed as a “street tracker” — a road-legal interpretation of a flat track race bike — and the original bike delivered on that idea in both style and attitude. Traditional 17-inch wheels were eschewed in favor of 19/18-inch rollers with chunky Dunlop DT3-R tires. Combined with the high-powered V-twin at the heart of the bike, the FTR was something of a hooligan flat track rider’s dream of a street bike:

With the 2021 model, however, Indian decided to go the more traditional route with 17-inch wheels and Metzeler Sportec rubber. The bike also received sportier geometry and a lower seat height. The bike is now much more planted — a worthy rival to the likes of the Ducati Monster and BMW R nineT.

Coverage Recommendation: Indian FTR

If you own your FTR outright, you can usually get away with nothing more than your state’s minimum liability coverage, often known as “Basic Coverage.” This is cheapest option available, though we don’t recommend it. Liability will only cover damages to a third party, not to you or your own bike. 

What we strongly encourage — and what your lender will require if the bike was financed — is “Full Coverage,” which will include collision, comprehensive, and possibly under/uninsured motorist coverage. While this obviously costs more than Basic, it will protect your bike in case of accidents, vandalism, theft, acts of God, and more.
