The Kawasaki KLX230 dual-sport and KLX230SM supermoto are both based on the KLX230R off-road bike — a clean sheet design for 2020, complete with a new air-cooled, fuel-injected 233cc engine. Reviews have been very positive:
“With street-legal designation and an air-cooled, fuel-injected engine with electric start, the KLX230 is the ultimate in low-maintenance versatility. You can take it into town for lunch, or just as easily take it on a fun run up a mountain road.” –Dirt Bike
As compared to a conventional dual-sport, the SM comes standard with dual 17-inch wheels, road tires, larger front and rear disc brakes, upside-down forks, and a lower seat height. Both KLX230 models are a good choice for folks who want a reliable daily commuter, ranch runabout, camper piggyback, or weekend gravel grinder.
While insuring a dual sport like the KLX is cheaper than a sport bike, you still have to shop around, as rates can vary hugely from one insurer to the next. If you want the best coverage for your money, it’s crucial to compare policies from multiple companies.
Kawasaki KLX230 Insurance Rates
Rates vary according to the rider’s location, age, driving record, credit score, marital status, make/model/condition of bike, loss statistics, coverage options, and the way a given insurer classifies the KLX. However, we’ve survey some real KLX owners to give you an idea of what to expect:
- Male, California, Basic Coverage: $438 / year
- Male, Nevada, Full Coverage: $230 / year
- Male, Arkansas, Full Coverage: $80 / year
- Male, California, Full Coverage: $207 / year
- Male, California, Full Coverage: $600 / year
- Male, Colorado, Full Coverage: $138 / year
- Male, New York, Full Coverage, $500 / year
Rates vary widely, as you can see, and wholly depend on the rider’s age, location, and more. One constant, however, is that you can usually save money by comparing quotes from different companies. For instance, the first rider surveyed, who was originally quoted $438 per year, ended up getting quoted $304 / year from Progressive and just $70 / year from Geico. As you can see, it’s very important to shop around. Fortunately, we can help.

Brief History: Kawasaki KLX230
The KLX230 hit the market in 2019 and a 2020 model. Unlike the heavier, liquid-cooled KLX250/300, which has been around for quite some time, the KLX230 was a brand new design, with the engine and high-tensile steel perimeter chassis engineered to work together.
The KLX230R is the off-road-only trail bike, while the KLX230 is a dual-sport with 21/18″ wheels and the KLX230SM is a factory supermoto, sporting twin 17″ wheels with larger brakes, lower suspension, and tarmac-oriented tires.
There’s also the KLX230 S, which comes with ABS and a lower seat height, and the special-edition KLX230 SE, which has special graphics, handguards, skid plate, and other features.
KLX230 Coverage Recommendations
Did you finance your KLX? If so, the bank or lender will require you to carry Full Coverage, which includes Comprehensive, Collision, and possibly Uninsured / Underinsured Motorist coverage. Generally, you can lower your rate by increasing your deductible. It’s a matter of finding a sweet spot that’s right for you and your finances.
If you own your KLX230 outright, then a liability-only policy (Basic Coverage) might be an option. It will certainly cost less than Full Coverage, but we encourage you to still consider Uninsured Motorist coverage, as more than 1 in every 8 US drivers are now uninsured.
We also encourage all KLX riders to attend a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) course. Not only will you get a 10-15% discount from your insurer as an MSF graduate, but the skills you learn could save your life.
