In 2017, Kawasaki replaced their outgoing Z800 with the new-and-improved Z900, a middleweight standard featuring a steel trellis frame and 948cc inline-four related to the one found in the Z1000, offering 126 horsepower and 2-mode traction control. The naked bike has compared favorably to rivals such as the Triumph Street Triple and Yamaha FZ-09. Then, in 2018, Kawasaki unveiled the retro/cafe Z900RS, inspired by the original Kawasaki Z1 of the early 1970s.

While the Z900 and Z900RS aren’t as expensive to insure as liter-class sport bikes like the Ninja ZX-10R, insurers have caught up with the trend, realizing these high-powered standards pack serious performance. Some carriers classify the Z900 as a “sport standard” or even “cruiser,” while others place it in higher performance categories — meaning higher insurance rates. That means it’s crucial to compare policies and rates from multiple insurers — otherwise, you could end up paying way too much. Fortunately, we can help.

Insurance rates for motorcycles vary widely based on the variables such as location, rider age, riding experience and driving record, and the way a given insurers classifies the bike in question. Thus, it’s difficult to estimate rates for any given rider. That said, here’s a summary from a veteran member of the Z900 forum:

“Seems unless you are in you late 60’s to 70’s, insurance tended to be around 800 to 1000 dollars a year. I pay 988, but I also have maximum coverage, and an almost minimum deductible.”

In order to give you an idea of what to expect, we gathered actual, real-world rates from a selection of Z900 owners. As you can see, rates vary tremendously:

  • Male, 27, Ohio, Clean Record, Full Coverage: $820 / year
  • Male, 28, Illinois, Clean Record, Full Coverage: $234 / year
  • Male, 30, Texas, Clean Record, Full Coverage, Dailyland: $600 / year
  • Male, 30, South Florida, Clean Record, Full Coverage: $1000 / year
  • Male, 32, Colorado, Clean Record, Full Coverage, State Farm: $720 / year (Other insurers quoted $1200-1600.)
  • Male, 46, Georgia, Clean Record, Full Coverage: $800 / year
  • Male, 50s, Connecticut, Clean Record, Full Coverage, Dairyland: $255 / year

One owner reported that, before he got his $600 annual policy from Dairyland, he was quoted over $1250 from another company for the same coverage. As you can see, rates vary hugely. The best and only way to make sure you get a good deal is by comparing policies and rate quotes from multiple insurers. Fortunately, we can help with that. When Kawasaki needed to replace their aging Z800, they developed and introduced the Z900 — a sport standard with a 948cc inline-four, steel trellis frame, and factory streetfighter styling. Like all of the Z-series machines, the bike’s founding forefather was the mighty Z1, a legend in its own time and a continued inspiration for naked, inline-four muscle bikes.

In 2018, Kawasaki took that inspiration a step forward with the Z900RS, whose styling, colors, and performance tuning are deliberate echoes of the legendary Z1 of the 1970s. Of course, the modern version is liquid-cooled, with traction control and
