The Suzuki Hayabusa (GSX1300R), introduced in 1999, became the fastest production bike of the 20th century and remains in an elite category of factory machines capable of exceeding 185 mph. The current version has a 1340cc, 197-hp engine and quarter mile times of less than 10 seconds.
Of course, all that speed comes with a downside — hypersport bikes like the Hayabusa can be very expensive to insure. So expensive, in fact, that some riders have been deterred from purchasing one of these machines simply because the rates are so high. That said, each company insures the bike at a different price, meaning you could potentially save hundreds of dollars per year by comparing quotes from different insurers. Fortunately, we can help you do just that from the comfort of your computer.
Hayabusa Insurance Rates
Insurance rates vary widely based on a variety of factors, which include but are not limited to rider age, driving history, state/county/city, the age and value of the bike, and coverage options and limits. That said, we have gathered a number of sample rates from real Hayabusa owners.
- Male, 24, North Carolina, Liability only, Foremost: $120 / year (Same rider was quoted $12,000 / year for full coverage!)
- Male, 27, Massachusetts, Full Coverage, Undisclosed company: $680 / year
- Male, 23, California, Full Coverage, Progressive: $3500 / year
- Male, 33, Undisclosed state, Full Coverage, Progressive: $1306 / year
- Male, 41, California, Full Coverage, Geico: $700 / year
- Male, 61, California, Full Coverage, State Farm: $550 / year
As you can see, rates vary widely, and comparing quotes and/or switching companies can result in significant savings. Says one veteran member of the Hayabusa.org forums:
It’s good to search around, because some companies classify the ‘busa as a hypersport, some as a sport tourer. Makes a huge difference in your “statistical risk”.
Fortunately, we have created a tool that streamlines the process of comparing quotes from multiple insurers. Enter your zip code and choose the companies from which you’d like to get a quote!

Suzuki Hayabusa: Model History
The Hayabusa was released in 1999 and immediately lauded as the world’s fastest production motorcycle, unseating the Honda CBR1100XX Super Blackbird by a full 10 mph. In fact, Hayabusa means “peregrine falcon” in Japanese — significant not only as the world’s fastest bird, but also because the raptor preys on blackbirds. Soon after the bike was introduced, the Japanese and European manufacturers reached a gentlemen’s agreement to (electronically) limit the speed of future hyper sport motorcycles to 186 mph, which went into effect on the year 2000 models.
The ‘Busa received further acclaim as an all-around sports machine that did compromise comfort, reliability, or handling in pursuit of the top speed record. In 2008, the second-generation Hayabusa was launched, with minor styling changes and a huge jump in power output, from 173 to 197 horsepower. Displacement increased from 1299cc to 1340cc, and the bike was given a new 4-2-1-2 exhaust system. The bike has three selective modes of power delivery, a heavy-duty slipper clutch, more streamlined fairing fasteners to simplify custom paint work, and a number of smaller chassis and brake improvements.
Coverage Recommendations: Suzuki Hayabusa
As you may have gathered above, full coverage can be significantly more expensive than liability-only coverage. A liability policy does not cover your Hayabusa, but damages to third parties or property if you’re in an accident.
If you finance your machine, the lender will require you to carry full coverage — no choice. However, if you buy the bike outright, you will have a greater range of options. If the bike is pre-owned, compare the value to the insurance premiums you would be charged for full coverage and make a decision as to whether it’s worth the cost. Many riders do recommend having strong coverage in the medical expenses category, which comes as part of comprehensive coverage.
