Suzuki DR-Z4S vs. DR-Z400S

Modern Refinement vs. Proven Simplicity…

Suzuki’s DR-Z400S has been one of the most iconic dual-sports of the last two decades — a durable, torquey, low-maintenance workhorse with huge aftermarket support. For 2025, Suzuki launched the DR-Z4S as the next evolution of the platform: fuel-injected, modernized, updated suspension, stronger chassis, and optional electronics.

Below is a full breakdown of how these two dual-sports compare, what’s changed, and which one makes the most sense for your riding style.

Overall Philosophy

• DR-Z400S — Classic, Simple, Proven

The 400S was designed as a rugged, air-quotes “forever bike.” Carbureted, easy to work on, and bulletproof, it’s beloved for its simplicity and reliability. It’s also one of the most modified dual-sports ever built, with endless parts availability.

DR-Z4S — Updated, Modern, More Refined

The DR-Z4S keeps the 398cc single-cylinder heart but updates nearly everything around it: fuel injection, electronics (ABS, traction control depending on market), LED lighting, stronger frame, and upgraded suspension. It aims to preserve DR-Z character while addressing modern expectations.

DR-Z400 vs DR-Z4S Pricing

  • DR-Z400S Used Market:
    • Typically $3,500–$6,000 depending on mileage, condition, and modifications
  • DR-Z4S New MSRP:
    • Typically $7,499–$7,999 depending on dealer and region

Engine & Power Delivery

DR-Z400S

  • Same 398cc engine since the early 2000s
  • Carbureted, simple, and extremely reliable
  • Strong low-end torque
  • Cold starts can be quirky depending on jetting
  • Very responsive to aftermarket mods

DR-Z4S

  • Same displacement but with fuel injection and revised internals
  • EFI offers smoother throttle response, better cold-start behavior, and improved altitude compensation
  • Ride-by-wire adds precision
  • Dual-spark ignition provides cleaner combustion
  • Same general power, but far more refined delivery

Winner:

  • DR-Z400S for simplicity and wrenchability
  • DR-Z4S for modern smoothness and everyday rideability

Chassis & Suspension

DR-Z400S

  • Steel tube frame
  • Conventional fork, decent travel but old-school
  • Proven but dated by today’s standards
  • Lighter feel in tight woods

DR-Z4S

  • New twin-spar steel frame + aluminum subframe
  • Inverted fork with modern damping
  • Stronger chassis rigidity
  • More comfortable on-road and more controlled off-road

Winner:

  • DR-Z4S — significantly upgraded suspension and frame

Weight & Ergonomics

DR-Z400S

  • Slightly lighter overall
  • Tall seat height (36.8”)
  • Traditional ergonomics familiar to dual-sport riders

DR-Z4S

  • Slightly heavier due to electronics and updated hardware
  • Lower seat height (~36.2″), making it more approachable
  • Updated handlebar, peg, and bodywork ergonomics

Electronics & Street Manners

DR-Z400S

  • Zero electronics
  • Perfect for riders who want analog motorcycles
  • Mechanical simplicity = fewer failure points

DR-Z4S

  • ABS, traction control, LED lighting (market-dependent)
  • Better safety on pavement
  • Modern lighting and controls
  • EFI makes commuting and mixed-use riding far easier

Winner:

  • DR-Z4S — but purists may prefer the 400S.

Which One Should You Buy?

Choose the DR-Z400S if you want:

  • A simple, durable, easy-to-maintain dual-sport
  • Maximum aftermarket support
  • Lower buy-in cost
  • A platform you can modify endlessly
  • A lighter, more old-school bike with fewer electronics

Choose the DR-Z4S if you want:

  • A modern dual-sport with EFI, ABS, better brakes, and upgraded suspension
  • Smoother on-road behavior and improved comfort
  • A bike that meets modern emissions and safety standards
  • A more refined dual-sport for mixed street/dirt riding
  • A new bike with warranty and zero hours on the engine

The Legend vs The Evolution…

The DR-Z400S is a legend because it works — everywhere, always. It’s simple, durable, and affordable, making it an outstanding used dual-sport in 2025.

The DR-Z4S takes the same formula and updates it for today. It feels like the bike the DR-Z400S would have become if Suzuki had modernized it earlier: fuel-injected, smoother, safer, and more comfortable, with better suspension and a stronger frame.

  • For budget buyers, purists, and tinkerers: go with the DR-Z400S.
  • For riders wanting a fresh, modern, ready-to-ride dual-sport: the DR-Z4S is the clear choice.

  1. Suzuki can pack sand. I’m sick of this crap on all engines at this point. They are failures you can fix in the moment that you might be able to with a carb engine. So frigging tired of this, and now we must pay more for the headaches. Nope. Restoring old bikes from now on.
