Over the years, we’ve continued to evolve our Top 10 lists to keep pace with what kinds of bikes prove popular among our readership each year. This past year, for the first time, we showcased enough high-traffic supermoto, hypermotard, and “retromotard” builds to warrant a standalone list.
As made clear in our previous Top 10‘s, this is an objective list based on traffic and social engagement data we compiled over the past year. Most of these builds are conventional single-cylinder supermotos, but we also allowed twin-cylinder hypermotards to qualify as well.
In the custom world at large, it seems the emphasis on cafe racers has waned slightly in the custom world in recent years, and the scope and range of customization has broadened to include more styles and platforms. We’re excited for this two-wheeled diversity, as the oversaturation of open-triangle cafe racers and knobby-tired BMW airheads was growing stale.
What’s more, as time goes on, the era of nostalgia evolves. We’re seeing more and more custom bikes with 90s influence, when both superbikes and motocrossers were bright, bold, and splashed with flashy graphics. We’ve had countless builders this past year talk about the influence of 90s motocross bikes to their contemporary work, which might account for the growing number of supermotos — basically dirt bikes converted for street use.
