In 2016, Honda revived the Africa Twin name with the CRF1000L, a 998cc parallel-twin adventure bike that serves as the contemporary incarnation of the Paris-Dakar racers of the 1980s. In comparison to much of the ADV competition, the new Africa Twin is a lighter, more off-road focused machine. For 2020, Honda gave the bike a bigger engine, creating the CRF1100L. The bike has been lauded by real-world owners and professional reviewers alike. Says Cycle World:
“The Africa Twin will take you everywhere you want to go, on or off road, in comfort and style. And it will do all of that for, in some cases, thousands of dollars less than its direct competition.”
Africa Twin Insurance Rates
There are many factors that contribute to your insurance premiums, from rider age and experience/driving record to your location, chosen coverage, and of course the specific model being insured — just to start. However, we’ve collected example rates from a variety of real Africa Twin owners to give you an idea of what to expect.
- Male, 25, Alaska, Full Coverage: $2600 / year
- Male, 25, California, Full Coverage: $3000+ / year
- Male, 29, Maine, Full Coverage: $751 / year
- Male, 36, Alabama, Full Coverage (+ Liability for CBR1000RR): $250 / year
- Male, 43, California, Full Coverage, Geico: $417 / year
- Male, 45, California, Full Coverage, Markel: $478 / year (Progressive was $876!)
- Male, 48, California, Full Coverage, AAA: $473 / year
- Male, 54, Colorado, Full Coverage, Farmers: $297 / year
Obviously, rates and premiums vary widely — even wildly — from $250 per year to more than ten times this much. It seems that some insurers charge especially high rates based on the engine size alone, but there are deals to be had if you request quotes from multiple companies. For instance, one rider cut his premiums in half by switching companies:
“I was able to find a much better deal on insurance — almost 50% cheaper — with Markel. I could have gotten the price down even lower — to about $300 — if I’d gone for reduced coverage (I max out the coverage for cases where I am at fault).”
It may seem like a pain to compare quotes from various insurance companies, but we can help. When you enter your zip code below, you can see powersports insurers operating in your area and begin requesting quotes.

Africa Twin History
The Africa Twin name is synonymous with the Dakar Rally, starting with the original rally-winning NXR-750 desert racers of the 1980s and the V-twin XRV production bikes based on them. The XRV750 remained in production from 1989-2003, with twin headlights, aluminum bash plate, rear grab rail, long dual seat, and more. Unfortunately, it was never readily available in the USA.
At the 2014 EIMCA show, Honda showcased a camouflaged prototype of a new Africa Twin, which was released in 2016 as the CRF1000L. The V-twin engine of its predecessors was replaced with a 998cc parallel-twin producing 94 horsepower and 72 lb-ft of torque, and the bike was available with a dual-clutch transmission that operates like an automatic.
At a shade over 500 lbs wet, the new Africa Twin was lighter and more maneuverable than many of the more road-oriented touring machines in the Adventure market. In fact, many reviewers saw the bike as a direct response to the heavyweight direction of the market, and a return to true off-road prowess.
For 2020, Honda gave the Africa Twin a larger engine, based on a longer stroke, and the bike was renamed the CRF1100L.
Recommended: Full Coverage
The cheapest way to insure any motorcycle is to opt only for liability coverage that meets the state minimums — no collision, comprehensive, or uninsured/underinsured motorist coverage. Unfortunately, we cannot recommend this type of coverage for the Africa Twin. Even in base trim, this is a $15,000 motorcycle, which could be a total loss if you have a liability-only policy.
While a liability-only policy might be appropriate for an older, low-value bike, we highly recommend full coverage for the Africa Twin. What’s more, if you have financed your bike, like many owners, then the bank or lender will require you to carry full coverage, which includes both comprehensive, collision, and possibly uninsured motorist.
