For the 2021 model year, Honda introduced the CRF300L / CRF300 Rally to replace the popular CRF250 models. Engine displacement was boosted to 286cc, and the new bikes benefit from improvements in suspension travel, chassis geometry, and a weight reduction of 11 lbs!

“Our time testing the CRF300L revealed its remarkable versatility in both on- and off-road situations. Honda’s smallest street-legal CRF is a very user-friendly platform with high build quality, impressive 68 mpg fuel economy, striking aesthetics, and an informative digital instrument cluster…” –Dirt Rider

The non-ABS version starts at just $5249 MSRP, which is a lot of bike for the money. However, it’s also important to factor in insurance cost. While dual-sports like the CRF300 are much more affordable to insure than sport bikes, rates can vary hugely from one company to the next. To get the best coverage for the money, we strongly recommend that you compare rates from multiple insurers — we can help.

2021 HONDA CRF300L

We surveyed a range of CRF300L and CRF300 Rally owners to see what they pay for insurance, and the rates ranged from $75 to $200 per year for full coverage. That’s significantly cheaper than you’d expect from a larger bike, particularly a supersport or sport bike.

That said, riders have reported receiving quotes for the same bike and coverage that varied hundreds of dollars per year, depending on the company. That’s why it’s important to shop your coverage among multiple insurers. Fortunately, we can help. Enter your zip code to begin.

Brief History: Honda CRF300L / CRF300 Rally

In 2017, Honda introduced the CRF250L, which was widely lauded for its on/off-road versatility, build quality, and value for the money. The 2021 update to the CRF300L / CRF300 Rally brought along a slew of improvements, including a displacement boost to 286cc, which translates to 27 bhp and 18% more torque thanks to revised cam timing.

Thanks to a new slipper clutch, the clutch pull is 20% lighter, and the bike itself has shed 11 lbs overall. The CRF300 Rally is the more adventure-focused, offering more seat padding and suspension travel, larger front brake, Dakar-style bodywork, and a larger tank capable of 250+ miles between fuel ups.

Rider magazine was well impressed with both models:

“The new 300s have the potential for reaching a very large audience of two-wheel enthusiasts. They are small enough to hang on the back of a car or RV, lively enough to generate grins all day long on most any surface, easy enough to ride that newcomers can quickly feel at home, and the Rally has range enough to travel.” –Rider

CRF300 Coverage: Basic vs Full Coverage

While opting for Basic Coverage — aka Liability-only — is the cheapest coverage option, it will only cover you in the event of damage / injuries sustained to third parties. If you financed your CRF, your bank or lender will require you to carry Full Coverage, which includes Collision and Comprehensive coverage.

Even if you’re not required to carry Full Coverage, we strongly encourage you to consider doing so, and to add Underinsured / Uninsured Motorist Coverage as well. Today, more than 10% of US drivers are uninsured. With a bike like the CRF300, the difference in coverage will likely be less than $100 per year — absolutely worth it to protect yourself and your bike.
