Introduced in 2018, the Honda Monkey 125 is the modern-day evolution of one of the most smile-inducing families of motorcycles in history — the Honda Z series, or Monkey bike:

“Do you have a favorite song that always puts a smile on your face? In the world of motorcycling, the Honda Monkey is that song.” -Honda

The Monkey can thank the beloved Honda Grom for its 125cc single-cylinder engine, tubular steel chassis, and 12-inch wheels. But the style, character, and charisma are all Monkey.

“All the required classic details are present and correct, including the old-school Honda Wing logo on the tank — but it doesn’t look any the worse for its modern features either. It even exudes an air of old-school Honda quality…” –MCN

While the $4249 base MSRP and incredible fuel economy (+100 mpg!) are easy on the wallet, insuring a Monkey isn’t quite as cheap as some owners have expected. There, it’s very important to compare quotes from several insurers, or you could end up paying too much. Fortunately, we can help!

Honda Monkey Insurance Rates

A dizzying array of variables influence your insurance rates, including zip code, age, driving record, credit, make / model / year of bike, and more. That makes it difficult to estimate your rates without getting an actual quote from an insurer.

That said, from surveying real Monkey 125 owners, we found that many pay in the neighborhood of $200 per year for full coverage, or $120 per year for liability-only. Again, however, rates vary widely from rider to rider and insurer to insurer.

The one way to make sure you get the lowest rate possible is to compare quotes from several companies. Fortunately, we have partnered with trusted motorcycle insurers to make it easy. Enter your zip code to get started!

Honda Monkey History and Specs

Believe it or not, the original Honda Z50 Monkey was inspired by a ride at a Tokyo amusement park called Tama Tech. As the story goes, people loved the ride so much that Honda executives decided to mass produce a motorcycle based on it, and the first Honda Monkey appeared in 1961.

These vintage models had 49cc four-stroke OHC engines, and spinoffs like the two-seat Dax also appeared. The Z50 was produced all the way up until August of 2017, when new emissions regulations finally spelled the end of the Monkey…or so we thought.

The modern Monkey 125, introduced in 2018, was an instant hit.

“The immediate riding impression of today’s Monkey is one of pure, visceral, monstrous fun. It’s a barrel of let’s-do-it-again fun. It shines…” –Cycle World

How to Lower Your Rates

Full coverage for your Monkey could set you back $100-600 per year, but there are steps you can take to lower your rates:

  • Good Student Discount:  Since many Monkey riders are in high school or college, it’s important to note that most insurers offer a discount of around 10-15% for a high GPA, typically 3.0 or higher.
  • Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) Course:  Taking a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Basic Rider course could not only save your life one day, but lower your rate by as much as 15%!
