In 2017, Honda introduced their new Rebel 300, a complete redesign of the 250cc Rebel that had been a mainstay of the Motorcycle Safety Foundation courses for more than 30 years. To say the reception was positive would be an understatement. Cycle World named the new Rebel 300 their “2017 Best Lightweight Streetbike,” while Cruiser selected it as their “Cruiser of the Year.” The 286cc motor has surprising pep, and riders as tall as 6′ 4″ have lauded the small cruiser’s ergonomics.
The Honda Rebel 300 costs less than $4400 off the showroom floor, which begs the question: how much is insurance? Below, we find out.
Honda Rebel 300 Insurance Rates
First we need to start with a small disclaimer, which is this: rates vary widely from rider from rider, state to state, and company to company. That said, we can give the following examples gathered from a variety of Rebel 300 owners and riders:
- Male, 45, Los Angeles, clean record, full coverage: $484/year
- Male, 32, San Diego, clean record, full coverage: $650/year
- Male, 41, Illinois, clean record, minimum liability plus comprehensive: $108/year
- Male, 50+, Florida, clean record, full coverage: $128 per year

Honda Rebel History
The original Honda Rebel 250 debuted in 1985, powered by a 234cc air-cooled straight twin. Said Motorcyclist of the bike:
“By targeting the bike to a young audience, such as those who watch MTV, Honda hopes to attract newcomers and expand the motorcycle market…”
However, the Honda Rebel appealed to more than just a young audience. It became a stable of Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) courses across the nation and remains one of the most popular beginner bikes in the world. The bike has even gained a cult following even in custom circles. For the econo-minded commuter, the air-cooled twin could return around 60 mpg, with a range of more than 190 miles.
In 2017, Honda introduced a completely redesigned Rebel 300, built around the motor from the Honda CBR300. This bike has a 27.4-hp single cylinder engine with liquid-cooling and a 6-speed transmission. It weighs 370 lbs with the optional ABS, and has a low seat height that manages to work for riders of all sizes.
The reviews for the new 300cc Rebel have been nothing short of stellar, with accolades and awards rolling in at an astounding pace. Already, the new Rebel has established itself as one of the world’s greatest bikes for new riders.
Honda Rebel 300 Coverage Recommendations
Here in the USA, liability is mandatory in all but a handful of states. That said, minimum coverage limits vary. Importantly, if you finance your bike through a dealer, bank, or credit union, you will be required to carry full coverage, which includes both collision and comprehensive coverage. This may seem excessive, but keep in mind that liability coverage only covers damages to another person or their property in an accident — it does not over your Rebel itself.
