The modern incarnation of the legendary Kawasaki Z1000 debuted in 2003, a factory streetfighter powered by a modified version of the ZX9R engine, tuned for more low-end torque and midrange power. Since then, successive generations of the Z1000 have remained a brutal, aggressive machines offering 125-140 horsepower — worthy evolutions of the original “Zed.”

The genesis of today’s Kawasaki Z1000 was the legendary Z1, introduced in 1972 — the first of Kawasaki’s Z-series, which now includes everything from the tiny Z125 Pro to the fire-breathing Z900 and Z1000. That air-cooled, 1000cc behemoth was the fastest production motorcycle of the time, and its successors, such as the KZ1000, carried that reputation to the street and track.
In 2003, Kawasaki relaunched a modern version of the mighty Z, the Z1000 — a contemporary streetfighter powered by a retuned version of the Ninja ZX9r powerplant, good for more than 125 horsepower. The Z1000 has undergone quite a few updates since then, including the addition of standard ABS, the switch from a steel to aluminum frame, and a larger and more powerful engine.
