In 2018, Royal Enfield introduced the Himalayan, a 411cc single-cylinder adventure bike quite unlike anything else on the market. None other than Peter Egan of Cycle World took rode his Himalayan test bike more than 3500 miles one summer soon after it was introduced, leaving his stable of lust-worthy machines all but untouched.
“It’s a bike that’s comfortable going absolutely anywhere, at least anywhere I have the ability to ride.” -Peter Egan, CW
The Himalayan has continued to earn praise for its versatility, build quality, and affordable price. Over the years, it’s gained switchable ABS, Royal Enfield’s Tripper navigation system, revised windscreen / seat / racks, and other updates. Still it boasts an MSRP of less than $5500 — significantly less than any other ADV bikes on the market.
However, when purchasing a bike, you’ve also got to consider the cost of insurance as well as the price. So how much does it cost to insure a Himalayan? Below we find out.
RE Himalayan Insurance Rates
As you probably know, insurance rates can vary widely based on age, driving record, zip code, credit history, and the insurers themselves. However, we sampled a few rates from Himalayan owners to give you an idea of what to expect.
- Male, California, full coverage: $514/year
- Male, Minnesota, liability only: $130/year ($190 for full coverage)
- Male, 55, full coverage: $260/year with $500 deductible
- Male, 25, full coverage: $1500/year with $500 deductible. (Lowered to $130/year and $250/year by switching insurers!)
As you can see, rates vary widely between riders, and even from company to company for the same bike and rider. Says the 25-year-old rider who lowered his rate by more than a factor of ten:
“I called my insurance agent up…and he was pretty appalled by the price. 30 minutes later he had found me a better deal.”
Not everyone has an individual insurance agent, but that doesn’t mean you can’t compare rates from multiple companies to find a better deal. In fact, we can help. Enter your zip code below to begin.

Himalayan History
None other than famed designer Pierre Terblanche — best-known for his many Ducati designs — led the team that designed the Himalayan. The bike was revealed in 2015 and became available to buy in 2016. Though some reviewers wished for more output from the original SOHC 411cc engine, the Himalayan was widely praised for its capable suspension, versatile character, long service intervals, and low MSRP.
ABS and EFI became standard in 2017, and in 2023, the new Himalayan 450/452 was released with a new 452cc liquid-cooled DOHC single-cylinder engine producing 39.5 hp power — a solid uptick from the original model.
The Himalayan remains one of Royal Enfield’s modern success stories, and has helped open the doors for more affordable middleweight adventure bikes from other manufacturers.
Himalayan Coverage
Most US states require riders to carry basic liability insurance, though coverage limits vary. Morever, if you financed your Himalayan through the dealer or your bank, they will require you to carry full coverage on the bike. While this increases your monthly premiums, it’s important to remember that liability coverage only covers damages to another person or their property in an accident — it does not cover your bike.
We encourage riders to carry the most coverage that can comfortable afford, as motorcycle accidents are on the rise…as are the number of uninsured drivers. That said, you don’t have to break the bank to keep your Enfield covered. Enter your zip code to begin searching for affordable coverage from a trusted carrier in your area.
