The Suzuki SV650 is one of the great motorcycle success stories. The 645cc V-twin machine has remained a rider and reviewer favorite since its introduction in 1999. The excellent handling, lively motor, and affordable price helped bring about a rebirth of “lightweight twins” as a racing class, and the SV650 brought home a host of awards from publications worldwide.

While the SV650 isn’t as expensive to insure as the all-out super sports of the GSX-R series, coverage can still be expensive — particularly if you choose the wrong insurer or policy. Fortunately, we can help you compare rates and polices from the comfort of your computer.

It really depends on age, marital status, and location, best bet is to talk to your insurance company (or get quotes from several) and ask about each bike separately.

Suzuki SV650:  Model History

Suzuki SV650 Insurance RatesThe SV650 was released in 1999 as a middleweight naked V-twin, while the fully-faired SV650S followed in 2000. The bike offered a 645cc, liquid-cooled 90-degree V-twin engine with 64 horsepower. Almost immediately, the SV began outselling the competitors that had long dominated the class and creating waves among motorcycling publications in the USA and beyond.

In 2003, Suzuki introduced a redesigned SV650, complete with a new aluminum truss frame and fuel injection. The bike offered slightly more power and improved handling. In 2009, the SFV650 Gladius replaced the naked SV650 in the US. However, the Gladius name was discontinued in 2017 with the introduction of the redesigned third-generation SV650, which offers more conventional styling reminiscent of the early SV series, along with four additional horsepower, low speed anti-stall system, optional ABS brakes, and more.

Currently, the bike competes against such midsize rivals as the Ninja 650 and provides a more affordable alternative to bikes like the Ducati Monster.

Coverage Recommendations: Suzuki SV650

Liability coverage is what’s required by most states. It’s much less expensive than full coverage — often half the cost — but it only covers damages to third parties or property if you’re in an accident — not you or your SV.

If you finance your machine, the bank or lender will require you to carry full coverage, which typically consists of collision and comprehensive coverage.

We recommend speaking to an agent about what coverage limits and deductible suit you best. In most cases, the minimum coverage requirements in your state will not be sufficient, and collision and comprehensive coverage are highly recommended for owners of sport bikes or any performance motorcycle.
