The Ducati Monster series has long been the standard in naked muscle bikes, best known for trellis frame and 90° L-twin engine. Over 300,000 Monsters have been produced, ranging from the entry-level 400 Monster to the 160-hp Monster 1200 R, the most powerful naked Ducati ever built.
Unfortunately, high performance often translates to high insurance rates — particularly in the case of motorcycles. While a Monster may not cost as much to insure as one of Ducati’s full-on Panigale superbikes, you can save yourself a lot of money by comparing rates from different insurers. We can help.
Ducati Monster Insurance Rates
Insurance rates are dictated by a wide range of factors, including your age, location, riding history, level of coverage, and the exact year, model, and displacement of your Monster: 400, 600, 696, 750, 800, 821, 900, 1000, 1200, etc.
For this reason, it’s very difficult to estimate what it will cost to insure your Monster. However, we have gathered rates from several actual Monster owners as examples:
- Male, 27, Monster 1100 EVO, Full Coverage: $570/year (Foremost)
- Male, 30s, Monster S4R, Full Coverage: $390/year (Undisclosed)
- Male, 30, Monster 1100, Full Coverage: $675/year (Undisclosed)
- Male, 28, Monster 696, Full Coverage: $179/year (Progressive)
- Male, 64, Monster 1100 EVO, Full Coverage: $465/year (Allstate)
The important of shopping around for the best rate is evidenced by the first owner, whose quotes ranged from $570 per year from Foremost, who classified the bike as a standard instead of a sport bike, to $1920/year from State Farm, $3008/year from Geico, $4400/year from Dairyland, and a staggering $6097/year from Progressive.
As a senior member of the Ducati Forum said:
“It’s really just not realistic to compare individual rates. I would contact as many places as possible to compare rates for yourself.”

Discounts and Best Practices
There are a number of discounts available from many insurers. Importantly, these are not automatic discounts. You must reach out to your insurance company to avail yourself of them.
- Desmo Owners Club: Some insurers offer a discount if you are a D.O.C., or Desmo Owners Club.
- Good Student Discount: A high GPA as a college or grad student could result in a nice discount, often 15%.
- Safety Course Foundation: Graduating from a Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) or similar course will not only improve your riding skills, but lower rate by as much as 15%!
A Brief History of the Ducati Monster
The Ducati Monster was introduced back in 1993, and has since become known as “motorcycle that saved Ducati” — such has been the model’s success. Interestingly enough, the Monster started as a mere design exercise, in which the designer envision what bike Marlon Brando would be riding today in his film The Wild One.
The “charging bull” stance and muscular lines of the bike quickly made an impression on reviewers and buyers alike. The 1990s saw the introduction of the M600, M750, and M900. Many of the components were derived from Ducati’s existing machines, which succeeded in keeping costs low.
The early 2000s saw the introduction of the Monster S4, S4R, and S4RS — powered by liquid-cooled, four-valve superbike engines. In 2008, the company introduced both the Monster 696 and 1100. In 2010, the 87-hp Monster 796 was launched, as well as the 1100 Evo. In 2014, the Monster 821 replaced the M796, boasting the 821cc Testastretta engine. Most exciting of all, Ducati introducted the 1200 R in 2016, offering a staggering 160 hp — 15 hp more than the old 1200 S.
