Rip-Roaring 650 Scrambler from Gas & Oil Bespoke Motorcycles…
Introduced in 2025, the Royal Enfield Bear 650 is the scrambler version of the Interceptor 650 (INT650) roadster. The name stems from the legendary 1960 Big Bear Run, when 16-year-old Eddie Mulder beat a field of 765 other racers on his Royal Enfield Fury 500 to take the winner’s trophy, bringing widespread recognition to himself and the brand.

The Bear 650 uses the same air-cooled 650 parallel-twin as the Interceptor and Continental GT models, coupled with 19″ / 17″ spoke wheels, a taller subframe, upgraded suspension with significantly more travel, updated ergonomics, and frame reinforcement to handle off-tarmac adventures. Like most factory scramblers — and the 1960s bikes that inspired it — the Bear is more comfortable on the road than off, but that makes it a great all-around motorcycle for most riders.
“The Bear 650 is a fun bike to push… While the Bear’s off-road chops are mostly aesthetic, Enfield’s frame reinforcements and updated ergos are very nice and now give Scrambler customizers a much better platform to start with.” –Cycle World
The “RAWBEARY” 650 you see here is the work of just such customizers. It was designed and built in the Czech Republic by Gas & Oil Bespoke Motorcycles in collaboration with Royal Enfield. We spoke to shop headman Matěj about the inspiration for the build:
“There’s already a great story behind this model, going back to the Californian desert races and Eddie Mulder’s legendary victory at the 1960 Big Bear Run. That history gave us the direction, but we never wanted to build a replica or create another nostalgic custom motorcycle. Instead, we asked ourselves what that same idea could look like today.”
Yes, the Gas & Oil team wanted to push the Big Bear spirit farther, turning this 650 scrambler into a modern incarnation of the desert sleds and scramblers of the 1960s…and making the transformation reproducible via plug-and-play parts.
Matěj gives us the full story below, but highlights include the desert plate lighting kit (complete with a Mulder-esque question mark), an assortment of protection parts such as the skid plate and oil cooler / exhaust guards, scrambler front fender and handlebars, desert sled-style seat, Britannia Trumpet Exhaust, and the Gas & Oil BOOSTBOX, which adds about five peak horsepower while improving throttle response, power delivery, and midrange punch.
The result? The burliest, rip-roaringest Bear 650 we’ve seen so far. Below, Matěj provides the whole story in his own words, and make sure to visit www.gasandoilmotorcycles.com if you’d like to add some “RAWBEARY” to your own Enfield.
In the Builder’s Words…
Question Everything. “RAWBEARY” started with a simple question: what if we took the spirit already present in the Royal Enfield Bear 650 and pushed it even further?
The Bear 650 was a natural starting point for us. There’s already a great story behind this model, going back to the Californian desert races and Eddie Mulder’s legendary victory at the 1960 Big Bear Run. That history gave us the direction, but we never wanted to build a replica or create another nostalgic custom motorcycle. Instead, we asked ourselves what that same idea could look like today.
Our inspiration came from the American desert scramblers of the 1950s and ’60s, the Big Bear Run, On Any Sunday, and the beautifully simple racing motorcycles of that era. Machines that were stripped of everything unnecessary and built with one purpose in mind: to be ridden. That philosophy became the foundation of RAWBEARY.
We started by changing the proportions of the motorcycle. The large factory headlight was replaced with our compact Desert Plate Kit and halogen light, followed by a new scrambler front fender, side panels, redesigned rear end and license plate holder.
The seat was completely reshaped and finished in leather, while minimalist Kellermann lighting allowed us to keep the silhouette as clean as possible.
Protection parts including the radiator guard, skid plate, exhaust cover and chain sprocket cover were designed specifically for the motorcycle rather than added afterwards. We wanted everything to look as though it had always belonged there.
The riding position was changed with our Classic Scrambler handlebars, requiring longer clutch and throttle cables and giving the rider a more natural position both sitting and standing.
Sound and engine character were equally important. The standard exhaust was replaced by our Britannia Trumpet Exhaust — a handmade stainless-steel system inspired by classic British competition silencers. Apart from giving the 648 cc parallel twin a much deeper voice, it saves approximately 4 kg compared with the original exhaust.
We then developed the Gas & Oil BOOSTBOX on the dyno. The standard motorcycle produced 47.4 PS and 56.5 Nm in our measurements; after development, we reached approximately 52 PS and 60 Nm, with the aim being not simply peak power, but a stronger and more enjoyable engine character.
The paintwork and finishing were deliberately kept rooted in the period that inspired the project. Hand-painted pinstriping, leather, metal and small brass details bring some craftsmanship back to a thoroughly modern motorcycle.
But there is another important part of the RAWBEARY idea. We didn’t want to create a one-off custom motorcycle that could never be reproduced. During development, many of the components were engineered as plug-and-play parts for the Bear 650. Owners can choose individual pieces or use the complete collection as the starting point for building their own scrambler.
RAWBEARY therefore became two things: a finished Gas & Oil motorcycle and a demonstration of what can be created from the Bear 650 without turning it into something it was never meant to be. It still has to feel like a Royal Enfield. It still has to be usable. And above all, it has to make you want to ride it.
We didn’t set out to recreate Eddie Mulder’s motorcycle. We set out to build a motorcycle we’d be proud to park next to his.
