The Yamaha MT-07 — known as the FZ-07 until 2017 — is one of Yamaha’s “Hypernaked” machines, a naked middleweight sportbike featuring a 74-hp parallel-twin engine with a crossplane crankshaft, traditional telescoping forks, and a horizontally-mounted rear shock that minimizes weight, wheelbase, and lowers the bike’s center of gravity. The bike has been almost universally lauded, with Cycle World publishing a 2018 review entitled: “The Yamaha MT-07 Is As Good As Everyone Says It Is” and saying in a 2020 update:
“Right for those looking to bomb down the twisties at a spirited pace, and set more than a respectable speed for freeway or street riding with its torque-rich engine and lightweight steel frame.”
With an MSRP of less than $8000, the MT-07 is one of the best values on two wheels. The only catch? Possibly the insurance rates. While it shouldn’t be as expensive to insure as its larger the siblings — the three-cylinder MT-09 and four-cylinder MT-10 — owners have reported being quoted some exorbitant rates by insurers. For that reason, it’s especially important to shop around, comparing rates from a variety of companies. Otherwise, you’re asking to pay too much.
Yamaha MT-07 Insurance Rates
Insurance rates are based on dizzying array of variables, which include your location, age, driving record, marital status, credit score, coverage options, and more. That said, we know you want to see what others are paying, so we’ve gathered data from a range of real MT-07 owners to give you an idea of what to expect.

As you can see, rates vary wildly. With machines like the MT “Hypersports,” which blur the lines between naked bikes and sportbikes, this seems to be especially true. Said one experienced rider:
“The only advice I can give is shop around, spend the annoying time to load up at least 3-4 quotes and compare. One of my quotes ended up being 1/2 the cost of all the others, for no logical reason that I could tell.”

Yamaha MT-07: Model History
In North America, the MT-07 began life as the FZ-07, released in 2015 with a liquid-cooled, DOHC, eight-valve 689cc parallel-twin mounted as a stressed member in a high-tensile-steel frame. Power output was 74 horsepower and 50 pound-feet of torque with a lot of midrange grunt. It had a full LCD dashboard, optional ABS, 41mm forks, and an MSRP under $7000.
“Clearly, there’s a level of refinement and style here that belies the FZ-07’s bargain price.” —Cycle World
In 2017, the FZ-07 became known as the MT-07 across all markets, and the bike continued to impress. Said well-known motorcycle author and journalist Roland Brown in a full review for The Telegraph:
“The Yamaha MT-07 is affordable to buy and incredibly good fun to ride. What more could you want?”
Yamaha also developed the XSR700 from the base machine, enlisting the aid of designer Shinya Kimura to create a “Faster Son” café racer special that became the basis for the XSR’s production form. For 2022, Yamaha introduced the R7 utilizing the same frame and engine — a sport bike that’s been highly lauded by media mavens and real-world riders alike.
Coverage Recommendation: Yamaha MT-07
If you own your MT-07 outright, the most affordable option you have is “Basic Coverage” — aka a liability-only policy, which does little more than meet your state’s minimum guidelines for coverage. Of course, liability doesn’t protect you or your MT in the event of an accident — only the damaged sustained by third parties.
For this reason, we strongly encourage riders to carry “Full Coverage,” which means collision, comprehensive, and uninsured motorist. While this may cost significantly more, it’s a much safer option that protects your bike in the event of an accident, theft, vandalism, and more.
What’s more, if you’re MT-07 is financed, your lender will almost certainly require you to carry Full Coverage. Fortunately, we can help you find a policy that won’t break the bank.
