The Yamaha XSR900, introduced in 2016, falls into the company’s “Sport Heritage” or “Neo-Retro” series of motorcycles — featuring the 847cc, 115-hp triple from the FZ-09 / MT-09 with more nostalgic, throwback styling. In fact, the XSR900’s design can be traced directly to the “Wasp” MT-09 custom built by Roland Sands — one of the modern legends of customization.

The bike has been lauded by reviewers around the world, with Cycle World naming the XSR900 their “2016 Best Middleweight Street Bike,” saying of the machine:

“Beneath the modern café appearance is a very sporting powertrain featuring refined multi-mode power-delivery profiles, traction control, improved sporting suspension calibration, and ABS brakes. “

Motorcyclist has been able to achieve a quarter-mile time of 11.07 seconds at more than 122 mph — very impressive for a modern standard. Of course, that performance can come at a price — at least when it comes to insurance. While the XSR900 certainly isn’t as expensive to insure as the Yamaha R1 or other all-out super sports, premiums can still be high — especially if you don’t compare rates ahead of time. Fortunately, we can help.

Yamaha XSR900 Insurance Rates

Yamaha XSR900 Insurance

As you may know, insurance rates for motorcycles vary even more widely than those for automobiles, as different insurers classify bikes into various categories based on displacement, style, power, and other factors. What’s more, rates vary based on all kinds of normal factors as well, such as rider age, driving record, marital status, place of residence, coverage options and limits — just to name a few.

To give you an idea of what to expect, we’ve collected rates from a range of real XSR900 owners:

  • Male, 28, Massachusetts, Clean Record, Full Coverage, Plymouth Rock: $540 / year
  • Male, 30, Pennsylvania, Full Coverage, Dairyland: $2100 / year
  • Male, 34, Texas, Full Coverage + Uninsured Motorist, State Farm: $520 / year
  • Male, 36, Minnesota, Clean Record, Full Coverage, State Farm: $216 / year
  • Male, 38, New Jersey, Full Coverage, Foremost:  $400 / year
  • Male, 62, Florida, Clean Record, Full Coverage + Uninsured Motorist, State Farm:  $226 / year

As you can see, rates vary quite widely from $216 per year to ten times that much. What’s more, some owners reported the XSR900 rates being quoted much higher than the related Yamaha FZ-09 — especially nearer the bike’s introduction. These discrepancies only reaffirm the importance of comparing rates from multiple insurers before you settle on a policy.

Yamaha XSR900:  Model History

Yamaha XSR900 Insurance

The XSR900 was released in 2016 as a middleweight naked with the same powerplant and technological underpinnings as the popular FZ-09 (known as the MT-09 outside of North America). The XSR was designed to appeal to a different set of riders, who wanted more of a “modern cafe racer” with retro styling and appeal. Yamaha enlisted the aid of none other than Roland Sands, one of the world’s best-known customizers, in developing the design of the bike.

In this process, performance was not forgotten. The XSR900 features an 847cc with a pavement-burning 115 horsepower and 65 lb-ft of torque, good for a quarter mile time of less than 11.1 seconds. What’s more, the bike comes with user-controlled throttle mappings, ABS, multiple traction control modes, and more. The result is a “Sport Heritage” or “Neo Retro” street bike that combines old-school style and cutting-edge tech.

Coverage Recommendations: Yamaha XSR900

In most states, liability coverage is required at the very minimum. While a liability-only policy is the most affordable option available, it will only cover damages to other parties in the event of an accident — not you or your XSR. What’s more, the liability in most states are not up-to-date, meaning they are insufficient in many cases.

We strongly recommend that you carry full coverage, which consists of collision and comprehensive coverage — and that you consider uninsured motorist coverage, as more than 1 in 10 drivers are now thought to be uninsured.

Of course, if you financed your XSR, the lender will require you to have full coverage — so it isn’t optional. In either case, it’s important to compare rates and policies from multiple companies in order to make sure you get the most coverage for your money.
