As a service member, you have probably run into difficulty insuring your motorcycle at some point. Some of those issues may have included: companies that do not offer coverage to service members, do not operate in every state (so you are forced to change companies when transferred), or companies that do not offer insurance internationally. To help determine the best motorcycle insurance for military service members, we have tracked down three that offer the widest variety of coverages and have solid A+ ratings to back their policies. First things first, though. Let’s have a look at some of the coverages you should have on your motorcycle.
Recommended Coverage for Military Riders
Every state has minimum policy requirements that have to be met by the drivers and riders registered in the state. In most cases, that is a liability policy that will barely cover you, your bike, and a passenger in a minor accident. If someone is seriously injured, you may be left with overwhelming medical and legal bills to pay out of pocket. To prevent that, we would recommend the following coverages:
- Collision coverage: this protects your bike in an accident under nearly every circumstance. It may or may not include uninsured/under-insured coverage. If it doesn’t, take care to add it.
- Uninsured/Under-insured motorist coverage: motorcycle insurance is required in nearly every state in the U.S., but statistics show that an average of 15 percent of the drivers/riders in the country do not have the required coverage. With so many uninsured motorists on the roads you can understand the need for uninsured motorist coverage. The under-insured aspect of the policy protects you in case the other driver only has liability coverage and damages from the accident are extensive, exceeding the limits on their policy.
- Comprehensive coverage: this protection covers items like fire, wind, water, theft, and vandalism.
- Bodily injury coverage: this protection covers certain costs if you injure or kill someone in an at-fault accident. It also protects your passenger.
- Medical payment coverage: this covers items such as prescription drug payments; dental care; medical co-payments and deductibles from other health coverage policies; home nursing care, or funeral expenses.
- Accessories coverage: this coverage protects items such as: saddlebags, backrests, seats, and chrome pieces, but not helmets. Some insurers require that you have comprehensive or collision coverage in force in order to have an accessories policy.
- Custom parts coverage: this will cover items that are unique like handmade tanks and pipes.
