Every century or so a guy comes along who can take almost any concept and turn it into an instant classic. These guys seem to live in a dream state that allows them to take what is and turn it into what will always be. One of those guys is Nuno Capelo. Capelo has worked with some of the top bike builders in the world, builders like it roCkS!, Ton-Up Garage, and now Dream Wheels Heritage for this incredible custom 1989 Honda Dominator.
Honda NX650 Custom
The Honda NX650 Dominator is a dual sport bike to begin with, so giving it a retro scrambler look did not take a ton of frame changes, but the aesthetics are awesome. After a few discussions, it was decided Capelo would give a nod to classic ’70s bikes like the TL250 and the CL450. According to Dream Wheel’s Helder Moura,
”We wanted to give to this build a retro scrambler look, paying attention to functionality and more accurate lines, for a mix between the new and the old stuff.”
The infusion of the TL250 can be easily seen in the slim-line fuel tank, taken from a Casal T-185 Trial. Follow that line of site and you will see the unique tuck-and-roll seat from the CL450. The true two-into-two exhaust is another nod to the CL450. This is a bare-bones bike, but Dream Wheels did build a subframe with a nearly invisible tray to hold the gel battery and electrical items. The minimalistic fenders were handcrafted in-house, with a small LED tail light in the rear.
Upfront, things get interesting. One of the most eye-catching features is the headlight. How can you gush over a headlight, you may ask? This one is a fog light from an old car that juts from a custom number board. Moving back, you will find a Koso speedo and fatbars from Dyna Racing padded by Domino grips. Dream Wheels completely rebuilt the original engine, electing to replace the airbox with a K&N filter.
The results are a home run for Capelo and Dream Wheels. We have sent a few emails asking for a test ride. Nothing yet, but we are still hoping!
