Steve Iacona’s custom-building career started early, with bicycles. From there, he progressed to dirt bikes, mopeds, and finally to cars like his Camaro SS show car. In 2003, he quit racing his Ducati 916 and bought his first Harley, a Softail to cruise around on with his wife. That got him into building custom Harleys, and so began Iacona Custom Cycles of Brooklyn, New York, where they build the very highest-quality customs.
We spotted this incredible Triumph, “Crusader,” at The Handbuilt Show in Austin, Texas, and got in touch with Steve for the details. The machine recalls the land-speed racers of the Bonneville Salt Flats. Says Steve:
“The inspiration was from Salt-flat racing bikes. I saw other bikes in the category, and figured i could put my own twist on the design. It’s actually built to be raced on the salt flats. Everything from the foot controls, 4″ stretched chassis (better stability) and etc.”
According to Steve, his favorite part is the front fairing. It has the integrated headlight, oil cooler. The center is made of steel, the windshield is handmade, and the two sides are symmetrical hand-formed aluminum.
