In 2005, in order to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the genre-defining, Dakar-winning R80G/S, BMW launched the HP2 Enduro — in the company’s own words, a modern version of their original adventure bike. It was no stylistic exercise. HP stood for High Performance, and the HP2 was designed as a highly aggressive twin-cylinder dual-sport with competition ambitions.
The 1170cc flat-twin (boxer) engine came from the R1200GS, delivering 105 bhp and 85 lb ft of torque, but the HP2 boasted a trellis tube frame that drew directly from the ex-Dakar R900RR race chassis, a conventional USD fork rather than the GS Telelever design, and many other modifications. All in all, it was more than 50 pounds lighter than the GS.
“Lineage is as you’d expect, derived from the R1200GS with concepts from the R900R, a.k.a. BMW’s works Dakar Rally bike. This makes sense, taking an award-winning adventure-touring bike and mixing it with race-winning insight.” –Cycle World
The HP2 Enduro has come to be known as “The Greatest GS (That Wasn’t Actually A GS).” The big twin-cylinder enduro soon silenced the naysayers, competing in the Baja 500 and 1000, German Cross Country championship, and the Erzbergrodeo, where Simo Kirssi rode the bike to victory in the Erzberg Iron Road Prologue in 2006 and 2007. Today, its rarity and performance make it something of a modern legend.
This 2006 HP2 Enduro — “Cassiopeia” — comes from our old friend Giorgio De Angelis of De Angelis Elaborazioni. Among other things, Girgio is known for building off-road rigs intended for long-range desert rallies like Scram Africa and La Ruta del Nabab. This bike was built for the latter, a 1400-km rally across the Saharan desert.
Some motorcycles are bought while others are built, at least in spirit, long before the tools ever come out. This HP2 is the one of them. Giorgio had a clear vision from the start. The bike took shape based on his requirements for La Ruta and his own creative spirit, eventually becoming the unique creation you see here, impossible to confuse with any other machine.
Giorgio drew on more than 20 years of experience in the world of off-road motorcycling, combined with a deep passion for custom builds and extreme personalization, to put his vision into every detail, every modification, and every technical decision. He says the goal wasn’t to make a BMW that would stand out from the crowd, but to conceive, design, and build a motorcycle with a distinct identity, carefully developed around the adventures it was intended to undertake.
Every component, every modification, and every aesthetic detail was considered and selected to create a coherent whole, bringing functionality, reliability, range, and character together in a truly personal project.
“This is the vision behind this HP2: not just a modified motorcycle, but a machine conceived, engineered and built around an idea of adventure.”
Giorgio envisioned a motorcycle capable of tackling long-distance journeys, African tracks, sand, rough terrain, and routes far removed from the comforts of paved roads. A machine built to be ridden for real, without sacrificing refined aesthetics or a strong personality.
Engineering, Range, and Functionality
Beneath this distinctive exterior lies a setup designed to tackle demanding journeys. Öhlins suspension is a key element of the build, and the bike now rides on 21/18″ F/R Excel rims paired with Dunlop rubber.
Range is a major concern for La Ruta del Nabab, which traverses some 1400-1500 kilometers of the Saharan desert. Giorgio went with a bespoke solution: two handcrafted aluminum fuel tanks designed specifically for this project, intended to cover long distances and reduce dependence on fuel stops during remote crossings.
The engine has also received a series of carefully considered modifications. These include an open exhaust system, a racing air filter, an ECU configured for the setup, and a custom-built oversized oil cooler. At the front, a Baja-style headlight and additional auxiliary lights have been selected to improve illumination during night riding and long transfers in low-visibility conditions.
Then there’s the bodywork, which immediately reveals the one-off nature of this desert-eating beast. The paintwork was entrusted to a Spanish artist, Mr. Ze, who reinterpreted the HP2 design through extremely thin copper film, black silkscreen detailing, and a glossy clear coat that enhances the bodywork’s contours and creates distinctive plays of light. The result is a machine that looks like it was born in the desert.
The fiberglass Kompotek fairings complete the transformation, giving the motorcycle an aggressive, unmistakable appearance while preserving its connection to the world of large-capacity rally raid enduro bikes.
The Next Destination: Ruta del Nabab
Despite the care invested in its customization, this BMW was never meant to remain pristine in a garage. The scratches and signs of age are part of its story. They’re evidence of a motorcycle that has been ridden — the beauty isn’t in the perfection of the finish, but in the substance of the project and the adventures that still lie ahead.
The next chapter of this story leads to Africa — specifically, La Ruta del Nabab. More than just a motorcycle trip, La Ruta represents a distinctive way of experiencing exploration: a community where personal relationships, mutual trust, friendship, and shared experiences play a central role.
Access is based on personal connections and introductions, within a network of people who share the same passion and a particular understanding of what adventure means. Friends of friends: people who become part of the group through trust and relationships built over time.
“The philosophy is simple, yet far from ordinary: help one another, share experiences, and face difficulties together. Because when you leave conventional roads behind, find yourself in the middle of an African trail or face an unexpected problem, the strength of the group becomes essential. It is not just about the motorcycle you ride, but also about the people riding alongside you.”
The motorcycles themselves reflect this spirit. They are not simply standard production machines, but personal interpretations prepared according to the terrain and challenges they’re expected to face. Every owner brings their own vision, history, and taste to the table, making their motorcycle different from every other machine.
It’s in this kind of environment that an HP2 like this can truly find its place: a motorcycle developed with a clear purpose, capable of expressing the personality of the person who envisioned and created it.
“Africa is more than a destination on a map. It represents the horizon of a new adventure, a land that evokes vast open spaces, sand, tracks, immense distances and that unmistakable sense of freedom that drives so many motorcyclists to seek new challenges.”
Giorgio says the bike wasn’t designed to appeal to everyone. Rather, it was built for those who recognize the value of a carefully considered setup, and who understand that behind a well-executed modification there’s often far more experience and thought than meets the eye.
“Above all, it was built to be used. Because a motorcycle like this has nothing to prove by standing still. Its story must be told where knobby tyres truly belong: on the trails, in the dust, among the dunes and along the tracks that lead towards the unknown.”
We wish Giorgio and “Cassiopeia” a safe, unforgettable adventure in the Sahara next month. Giorgio, may “Cassiopeia” lead you into the wilderness and return you home safely, with many new visions and stories to tell.
