Wheels & Waves 2024: Punk’s Peak!

Punk's Peak 2024By BikeBound photographer and correspondent, Kati Dalek (@kayadaek_photography)…

W&W begins with a traditional highlight, the “Punk’s Peak Race,” a mountain race in the foothills of the Spanish Pyrenees. The wild sprint bikes streak over the crest of Mount Jaizkibel, with breathtaking views of the expanse of the Atlantic and over the Basque port city of Hendaye.

From the mist of the mountains above Hondarribia, we can see the infinity of the Atlantic. The huge BBQ grill is already on fire and the good smell of strong coffee is in the air. Simply enjoy.

In addition to this unique location with horses and sheep in the pastures and vultures in the air, the competition is of course remarkable.

The sprint races are about nothing but honor and good stories. So each of the 400-meter drag races, which start with a pistol shot, becomes a show. Yamaha Europe has provided exclusive Yard Built models.

Punk's Peak 2024These motorcycles are a tribute to the glorious GP machines of yesteryear. A Yamaha XSR 900 GP in the Christian Sarron TZ250 design, 1984, will be ridden by Christian Sarron himself, the 250cc world champion. What an honor!

Cafe racers, choppers, and special machines from all eras and workshops are parked next to the pony pastures. There are no losers in the one-on-one duel. What counts is fun, ambition, and the love of speed.

After the Yamahas were allowed onto the track for a test lap, the race could begin. The pre-50 choppers were the first to start. Unfortunately, there was a serious accident and the race had to be stopped. From the bottom of my heart I wish the riders a speedy recovery and all the best. Let’s celebrate life next year.

  1. Cool but I would still rather see Eddie Mulder or his buddy Mickie on Triumph dirt trackers racing up the hill.
