Little Red: 250cc Honda XL125R Restomod

Honda XL125 RestomodA 250-powered XL125 Restomod from 1008 Moto Garage…

In 1982, Honda replaced the beloved XL125S with the XL125R — a similar dual-sport machine but with Pro-Link single-shock rear suspension, 12-volt electrics, and new styling. These 125cc air-cooled SOHC Hondas have gained something of a cult following over the years. Cycle World was impressed with the XL125 from the beginning, and our buddy Greg Gilson of Small CC Savage has raced his XL125 in the FIA-sanctioned Rallye du Maroc, Baja 1000, and numerous motocross races.

“Without question the XL125 is one of the few bikes sold today that can take the abuse of both on and off-road riding and ask for more without even breathing hard.” –Cycle World

This ’88 XL125R restomod comes from our new friend Erol Toledo of Manila’s 1008 Moto Garage, who began building custom bikes in 2019. Today, he’s the owner/builder behind his own workshop, and he also creates videos for the Vinduro PH community.

Honda XL125 RestomodHe bought this ’88 XL from Facebook Marketplace to build up as his own personal enduro bike.

“What arrived was a worn and weathered machine, brought back to life piece by piece with patience and vision.” -1008 Moto Garage

Honda XL125 RestomodThe bike needed a full restoration, and Erol envisioned bringing the old thumper back to life as a Baja-style restomod.

“Vintage rolling chassis equipped with modern technology (digital speedometer, dual LED headlights, disc brake front end, and 250cc engine with electric starter).” -Erol

Honda XL125 RestomodThe transformation began with a complete teardown. Every component was stripped down and rebuilt or replaced to restore the foundation properly before building it back stronger and better than before.

Honda XL125 RestomodErol updated the bike with a disc brake front fork assembly for improved stopping power, a digital speedometer for modern functionality, and Baja-inspired dual LED lights for a sharper, more purposeful front end. The chassis, tank, side panels, and fenders were refinished in bold red, giving the bike a striking and aggressive presence while staying true to its classic enduro roots.

Honda XL125 RestomodTo enhance both power and versatility, the engine was upgraded to 250cc — delivering stronger performance while maintaining everyday rideability. This was no straight swap — Erol had to fabricate new engine mounts to swap in the 250cc six-speed electric-start engine.

Honda XL125 RestomodNicknamed “Red,” this 250-powered XL125R is a perfect blend of old-school charm and modern convenience / reliability.

“Built with balance between restoration and innovation, this XL125R proves that true restomod culture is about respecting the past while engineering for the future.” -1008 Moto Garage

We look forward to showcasing more of the bikes that roll out of this Manila-based garage. Below is a full interview with Erol about the build. The outdoor film shots come courtesy of @s.n.t.l.m.o.

    I have a 2025 crf150 l will a 250cc engine fit on this bike with existing mounts.

    • Not likely. That’s a much different model than this one, which rolled out of the factory nearly 40 years ago! And Erol still had to manufacture new motor mounts. What would work best for you is a big-bore kit installed by a good shop. Google “CRF150 big bore kits” or similar and you’ll find kits to take your engine to 200+ cc 👍
