The Honda CBR500R was introduced in 2013 to fill the need for a midsize, 500cc sport bike. Whereas the bike’s smaller sibling, the CBR300R, is a single-cylinder, the CBR500R is powered by a 47-hp, liquid-cooled parallel-twin — good for 0-60 times of 5.2-5.3 seconds. The same engine and chassis is used in the CB500F naked bike and CB500X adventure tourer.

While the CBR500 may not be as aggressive a machine as the race replica CBR600RR, insuring any sport bike is notoriously expensive. For that reason, it’s critical to compare rates from a range of companies — otherwise, your annual or monthly premium could break the bank.

CBR500R Insurance Rates

As you may know, rates vary hugely from rider to rider. The factors are myriad: rider age, experience, record, location, credit score — not to mention coverage options and the age of the bike. For this reason, it’s difficult to estimate the rates for any one rider. However, we gathered a range of actual premiums from actual CBR500R owners.

  • Male, Boston, clean record, full coverage, undisclosed carrier:  $482/year
  • Male, Ohio, full coverage, Rider Insurance: $180/year
  • Male, Ohio, full coverage with roadside, Progressive:  $423/year
  • Male, Maryland, full coverage, Progressive: $375/year
  • Male, West Virginia, comprehensive with roadside, Rider Insurance: $111/year
  • Male, Bay Area (CA), Progressive: $350/year
  • Male, Bay Area (CA), full coverage, undisclosed carrier: $750/year

As you can see, the rates vary widely from rider to rider and area to area. Notably, riders have reported that the CBR500R is significantly more expensive to insure than the CB500F — possibly due to the fairings. Owners also reported being able to cut their premiums dramatically by checking with other insurers. Fortunately, we can help you compare quotes from different companies.

Honda CBR500R History

Honda CBR500RR Insurance

The CBR500R was introduced in response to new European licensing regulations, which created a need for a midrange sport bike. Introduced in 2013, the bike is powered by a liquid-cooled, 471cc parallel twin with 47 horsepower and 32 lb-ft of torque. The CB500F is basically the same beast in less clothing, while the CB500X is the adventure touring (ADV) model.

The CBR500R has been largely praised as a sporty, versatile, affordable, and low maintenance machine. It’s gaining an on-track reputation as well, as the bike has been used for the European Junior Cup and CBR500R Cup in France and Brazil.
