The Kawasaki Versys is the Team Green’s family of adventure-touring motorcycles, named from a combination of the words versatile and system. The family started with the Versys 650 (KLE650) back in 2007, using the Ninja 650 parallel twin. In 2012, the Versys 1000 arrived, and the lighter weight Versys-X 250/300 came along in 2017.
“Renowned for superlative versatility and lively performance, Versys® motorcycles are the ideal urban adventure partners as well as capable backroad companions.” -Kawasaki

Brief History: Kawasaki Versys
In 2007, Kawasaki introduced the original Versys to Europe and Canada, and we received it here in the States a year later. The parallel-twin engine came from the Ninja 650, though it was retuned for better low-end torque. As mentioned before, the name is a portmanteau: Versatile x System = Versys.
“As the marketing driven name suggests the Kawasaki Versys 650 is incredibly versatile, the jack of all trades.” –MCN
In 2012 (2015 stateside), the Versys 1000 arrived, boasting the 118-bhp four-cylinder engine from the Z1000. Rider magazine went so far as to give it their Motorcycle of the Year Award:
“Here was a motorcycle that combined all of the good traits of adventure bikes — comfortable, upright seating; compliant, longer-travel suspension; good wind protection and moderate weight — with performance and handling near that of a liter-class sport-touring machine. In short, a sport-adventure ‘VERsatile SYStem’ for riders with little or no off-road aspirations.” –Rider
More recently, the Versys-X was introduced, now running the liquid-cooled twin-cylinder engine from the Ninja 300. Given the light weight and great low-speed handling, the bike is surprising good in the dirt, and one of the most affordable adventure-ready machines on the market.
“As one of the smallest-displacement adventure-touring motorcycles on the market, the little Versys-X will be approachable for beginners, but the fun factor from its capability in the twisties and off-road potential appeals to riders of all skill levels.” –Cycle World
Kawasaki Versys Coverage Recommendations
Most of the rates we featured above are for Full Coverage, which typically includes Comprehensive, Collision, and sometimes Uninsured Motorist coverage. We highly recommend that you consider Full Coverage, even if it costs a few bucks more per month. While a liability-only policy (“Basic Coverage”) might be your cheapest option, it only covers damages and injuries to third parties.
What’s more, if you financed your Versys, your bank or lender will mandate Full Coverage. A better way to save a few dollars from your premiums is to attend a weekend Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) course, even if you’re veteran rider. Most insurers provide a solid discount for MSF graduates, and the skills could save your life.
