The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14 was introduced in 2006 as the successor of the ZX-12R. Until the introduction of the supercharged H2 hyperbike, the ZX-14R was the most powerful sport bike in the company’s arsenal with 190-208 horsepower on tap. The bike has been clocked with 0-60 times of 2.5 seconds and a quarter mile of well under 10 seconds.

Not surprisingly, high insurance rates are one of the downsides to such blistering performance numbers. In fact, there were early reports of the big Ninja being placed on the prohibited list of several smaller insurers. While blacklisting is no longer an issue with the ZX-14R, rates can be exorbitant if you don’t do your homework to find the right coverage. Fortunately, we can help.

As you probably know, there are a great many factors that influence your insurance rate:  make/model, rider age, driving record, county of residence, and coverage options — among other factors. That said, we were able to gather sample rates from a variety of real ZX-14 owners:

  • Male, 40+, New England, Clean Record, Progressive: $763 / year (Quoted as high as $3900!)
  • Male, 50, Clean Record, Geico: $600 / year (Progressive was $1600)
  • Male, 35, South Jersey, Clean Record, Geico, Full Coverage: $700 / year
  • Male, 59, Bristol, VA, Recent Speeding Ticket, Progressive, Full Coverage, $1000 Deductible: $800 / year
  • Male, 47, East Tennessee, Farm Bureau, Full Coverage, $500 Deductible: $360 / year
  • Male, 25, California, State Farm: $1800 / year
  • Male, 56, Washington, Progressive, Full Coverage, $500 Deductible: $4300 / year
  • Male, Arlington, WA, State Farm, Full Coverage: $690 / year
  • Male, Pittsburgh, Riders Insurance, Full Coverage: $690 / year
  • Male, Lincoln, CA, State Farm, Full Coverage, $500 Deductible: $800 / year
  • Male, Lumberton, TX, State Farm, Full Coverage: $600 / year

As you can see, rates vary widely. Here’s the insight from one member of the ZX14 Ninja forum:

“I just reiterate that it almost always PAYS to shop around…I have my ZX-14 insured with liability and comprehensive for $175/year. But the last time I checked around the rates varied by almost 10:1! That’s a HUGE spread and it shows how insurance rates are about as arbitrary as airline fares.”

Again and again, we hear stories of riders securing exponentially lower rates when they find the right insurer. Fortunately, we can help you compare quotes from multiple insurers in one place. Enter your zip code to begin.

Ninja ZX-14 History

Kawasaki ZX14 Insurance

The Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14 was introduced in late 2005 as the successor of the ZX-12 — one of the world’s fastest sport bikes. The new 1352cc Ninja immediately made a splash in the motorcycling world as one of the fastest production bikes ever built.

In 2012, a more powerful, 1441cc edition was released, now called the ZX-14R. This bike still retains the crown for the fastest quarter mile recorded from a stock production bike: 9.47 seconds at 152.83 mph. Said Cycle World of the new engine:

“For the experts on our staff, it’s the closest thing to a turbo bike we’ve yet experienced. Addicting? Yes! Frightening? Yes! For less-experienced riders, it was the closest thing to a Grizzly attack.”

The ZX-14R also gained Kawasaki’s KTRC traction control, slipper clutch, and updated radiator to make the bike run cooler. Since then, the ZX-14R has remained competitive with the other members of the hypersport class, including the Suzuki Hayabusa.

Kawasaki Ninja ZX-14: Liability or Full Coverage?

In the USA, all but a handful of states require motorcyclists to carry liability coverage. No coverage, no registration.  As you probably know, liability covers damage to third parties in an accident — not damages to you or your bike. Full coverage, on the other hand, typically consists of collision and comprehensive coverage. This adds significant cost to your premiums, and different riders have different views of whether it’s important.

We tend to side with this member of the ZX14 Ninja Forum, since the plastics that cover the ZX14 are so expensive to replace:

“The kind of crash that is very likely is a driveway tipover. Carry comprehensive for a small extra fee and it’s covered. I would have broke even if I carried comprehensive because I’ve had three tipovers in seven years. One was so minor there was no need to replace a thing. The other cost me a thousand bucks out of my pocket…”

That said, the majority of sport bikes are financed, in which case the lender requires the rider to carry full coverage as a condition of the loan. No matter what coverage you want, your best bet is to compare quotes from multiple insurers, as rates vary widely.
