Middleweight sportbikes like the R6 are a lot of fun to ride. A lightweight, hundred-horsepower machine can force adrenaline to places you didn’t know you needed it. But the lightness and speed of these hard-hitting supersports work against you in one category: insurance coverage.
Sport bike insurance can be expensive once you find a policy. Given that the Yamaha YZF-R6, or Yamaha R6 if you prefer, is one of the quickest and most popular bikes on the market today, it can be especially difficult to find an affordable insurance policy. Luckily, most national insurers offer YZF-R6 insurance; however, each offers it at a different price. It can be easy to overpay for motorcycle insurance if you are not careful. Let’s have a look at the history of the Yamaha YZF-R6, a few of the types of insurance coverages that you may need, and a few ways that you can keep your insurance costs down.
A Brief History of the Yamaha R6
The Yamaha YZF-R6 was introduced for the 1999 model year. It was built to be the super sport upgrade of the Yamaha YZF-R1 and as a high performance companion for the Yamaha YZF600R.
The first bikes were powered by a 599.8 cc transverse-mounted inline four. This new design allowed the Yamaha R6 to offer up to 108 bhp, the first 600 cc stock four-stroke bike to produce in excess of 100 bhp. The early bikes had a bore and stroke of 65.5 mm and 44.5 mm and torque peaked at 42.1 lb-ft. The R6 had a top speed of 160 mph, a 0-60 time of 3.35 seconds, and a quarter mile time of 10.97 seconds at 127.11 mph.
By 2016, fuel injection, a new engine management system, a multi-plate slipper clutch, the YCC-I variable-length intake system, and an improved frame have been integrated into the production Yamaha R6. The 2016 Yamaha YZF-R6 is powered by a 599.4 cc inline four with titanium valves. Bore and stroke are now 67.0 mm and 42.5 mm. Torque now peaks at 42.4 lb-ft. It has a top speed of 160 mph, a 0-60 time of 3.0 seconds, and a quarter mile time of 10.67 seconds at 130.79 mph.
Yamaha YZF-R6 Coverage Recommendations
Most states require insurance coverage for motorcycles. The minimum coverage required is usually a liability policy. These policies will not cover your bike, just the damages you do if you are found to be at fault in an accident. If you have a loan against your bike, your lender will require you to have more coverage than the state minimum policy. The risk of having to pay for repairs out-of-pocket and bank requirements are why all riders should have more coverage than a simple liability policy. The coverage you may need include collision, comprehensive, and uninsured motorist. Also, if you have more than $1000 in modifications to your R6, additional equipment and accessory coverage is a wise choice.
Yamaha R6 Insurance Rates
Certain factors affect motorcycle insurance premiums. These include:
- Make and model of bike
- Driving record
- Age of rider
- State you live in
- Credit score
With those factors in mind, there are ways you can lower your premiums. Given that R6 insurance can range between $20 and $200 per month (depending on the company you use and state you live in), you will want to do everything possible to keep your costs down.
Keeping Your Coverage Affordable
Attend a Motorcycle Safety Foundation Course
Graduating from a two day MSF course will enhance your riding skills, allows you to skip the ”skills” portion of the license process, and lowers your premiums. You can visit the MSF website to find a course near you.
Good Student Discount
If you are still in high school or are in college, most insurers offer a discount for maintaining a high GPA. For most insurers that GPA is in excess of a 3.0, but you will have to ask the insurer you choose.
Maintain a Clean Driving Record
This is just a logical way to keep your premiums down. Citations for DUI, reckless operation, and speeding are guaranteed to raise your premiums for years.
Insure All Vehicles with the Same Company
All insurers offer a multi-car discount that can cut your premiums by up to 25 percent.
