States

Motorcycle insurance laws and regulations vary from state to state.  Mandatory coverage limits are set at the state level, defining the amount of liability coverage you must carry for personal injury and property damage, as are laws dictating handlebar height, mirrors, turn signals, headlights, and mufflers. Of course, there are state-specific helmet and eye protection laws, and the ever-popular noise limits for motorcycle exhausts.

When building a custom bike, these are especially important guidelines for making sure your bike passes inspection and doesn’t elicit the undue attention of the local boys in blue.  Many of the regulations depend on the age of the bike.  For example, in Georgia, bikes manufactured before January 1, 1972, are not required to have turn signals.  There are similar regulations in every state, which are especially vital to those with vintage or custom bikes.

Below, we review motorcycle insurance laws by state, as well as other pertinent regulations for the two-wheeled enthusiast.
