The Yamaha SR400 was first introduced way back in 1979, though it wasn’t available outside the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) until 2014. Developed as a street version of the legendary XT500 enduro, this 399cc air-cooled single retains the classic lines of the original while offering modern upgrades like fuel-injection. Unique among today’s production bikes, the SR400 eschews a heavy electric starter in favor of an authentic kick-starter. All in all, the retro looks and charismatic engine have the SR a favorite platform for customization.

Yamaha SR400 History
The Yamaha SR400 was developed in the 1970s as a British-inspired, easy-to-use big single “thumper” that emphasized character and design over outright performance. The engine was similar to the one used in the Yamaha XT500 enduro, one of the most legendary machines in on/off-road design and a winner of the grueling Paris-Dakar Rally.
The SR400 remained available only in Japan until 2014, when the bike began being sold in Australia, Europe, and here in the United States. The SR is perhaps the most “vintage” and “retro” of any modern production machine. While it has fuel injection, it does not have an electric starter, which saves weight and gives the rider the gratification of kick-starting their machine…without headaches or twisted ankles of a vintage machine. Between the fuel injection and decompression lever, this is one of the easiest machines to kick-start.

Yamaha SR400 Coverage Recommendations
Liability coverage is a requirement in most US states — typically, you must show proof of income to register your SR400. Liability, of course, only covers damages to third parties in an accident. If you have a liability-only policy, you’ll have to cover your own expenses resulting from a crash.
Full coverage, on the other hand, typically includes liability plus collision and comprehensive coverage. While a liability-only policy might be dirt cheap, we highly recommend full coverage — otherwise, you could be on the hook for the cost of your entire bike in the event of an accident or other mishap. What’s more, if you finance your SR400, your bank or lender will require you to carry full coverage.
