BOLT Motor Company’s 100th Build…
Back in 2001, Kawasaki released the ZRX1200R, a neo-retro muscle bike that carried on the style of the ZRX1100 and original KZ1000R Eddie Lawson Replica. It had a beefy double-cradle steel frame, traditional twin rear shocks, and a burly 1164cc liquid-cooled four-cylinder that made 122 bhp. The engine itself was derived from the ZZ-R1100 motor of the 1990s, known to last forever.

Cycle World said the modern incarnation of the Eddie Lawson replica outshone the original:
“The 1164cc ZRX1200R was faster than its predecessor, turning a 10.85 at 125.72 mph in our testing… The real thing never worked half as well as this modern equivalent… slick execution slid under a resonant appearance… it carries one of the Great Motorcycle Engines.” –Cycle World
In addition to the ZRX1200R (bikini fairing), the bike was also sold as the ZRX1200S (partial fairing), ZRX1200C (no fairing), and the Japanese-spec ZRX1200 DAEG remained in production until 2017 — quite the run!

For all its appeal, however, the ZRX had significant drawbacks. It weighed nearly 500 pounds, had a “bouncy castle” rear end (MCN), and seemed overly soft overall for some riders.
“I’m convinced there is an utterly belting bike in the ZRX but at the moment it’s smothered in a hefty blanket of cotton wool…” -Warren “Wozza” Pole, Visordown
Fortunately, there are workshops like Spain’s BOLT Motor Co. who are only too happy to sharpen the aging hulk into a lighter, faster, more precise instrument. The Valencia-based workshop, based out of the Campos Racing facilities, has always stood out for their engineering precision and attention to detail — not surprising given that the same mechanics and builders produce machines that compete in F2, F3, F1 Academy, and more.
Given that this was the BOLT team’s 100th build, they held nothing back, as you’ll see in the details below. At the same time, they worked to maintain the muscle bike’s old-school charisma.
“We did not want to change its character. We wanted to solve its limits.”
In our opinion, they’ve addressed the ZRX1200’s shortcomings while accentuating the core character of the bike, creating one very potent machine. Congratulations to the whole team on building BOLT #100…a worthy bearer of the centennial title.
Below, the BOLT team gives us the rundown of the build in their own words.
Bolt #100: In the Builder’s Words…
There are motorcycles that are born with a clear identity. And there are others that, over time, call for a second
reading. The Kawasaki ZRX1200 is one of them. Launched in 2001 as an evolution of the ZRX1100, it never tried to be light or extreme. Its purpose was different: immediate torque, presence, and a kind of pull that is felt more than measured.
It boasted a four-cylinder engine derived from the ZZ-R1100, tuned to deliver strength from the bottom end, capable of opening the throttle in any gear and responding without effort. A motorcycle that asks for no permission. That was the starting point.
We did not want to change its character. We wanted to solve its limits.
- Reduce weight
- Improve response
- Increase precision
- A more direct, more agile, and more alive machine
ENGINEERING
The front end was completely redefined.
Öhlins Fork: Top-tier, with higher-spec fork legs, paired with CNC-machined triple clamps by BOLT. There is no catalogue here: every part was selected or fabricated to address a specific need in terms of geometry or behavior.
Custom Brake Discs: They were not selected; they were built. Starting from the original core, we developed our own discs, cut and finished under our control. A process that defines the difference between assembling parts and solving a
system.
Brembo Gold Series Calipers: Custom-made wheel axle and steering stem complete a front end that
completely transforms the bike’s feel.
ELECTRONICS AND CONTROLS
Electrical system: LED headlights and a reinterpreted retro instrument cluster coexist with a completely new electrical system developed by BOLT. ECU, wiring, and electronic logic designed from scratch to simplify, reduce weight, and improve reliability.
Controls and finishes: Royal controls, Biltwell grips, and Highsider mirrors complete a clean setup, with no visual noise, where each element has a clear function.
CRAFTSMANSHIP
The tank incorporates a Monza cap and the client’s signature, integrating identity without breaking the coherence of the whole.
Single-seater configuration, with a seat made from genuine leather by our craftsmen, worked with the same level of care as any mechanical component.
There is no separation between aesthetics and function here. Everything is part of the same language.
ENGINE
The heart, the engine, was completely rebuilt.
Inspection and tuning: It was inspected, tuned, and enhanced to deliver a more direct, fuller, more immediate response.
Handcrafted exhaust: New headers and a handcrafted exhaust system developed by BOLT
redefine both delivery and sound.
Carburetion and cooling: The carburetors were recalibrated, and a larger-capacity radiator was integrated to ensure thermal stability in a setup that now demands more.
The result: It is not more power without control. It is a more precise, more usable, more coherent delivery.
REAR CHASSIS
Rear section: The original swingarm was modified to achieve an aesthetic and structure closer to Bimota-type solutions, strengthening both its presence and its behavior.
Revised twin rear shock absorber: Updated rear disc and Pirelli racing-spec tires complete a setup focused on grip, stability, and road feel.
Fiberglass tail section: It integrates square taillights that reinterpret the language of 1980s racing bikes. A clear nod, but resolved from a contemporary perspective.
THE RESULT
Lighter. More precise. More direct. A ZRX1200R that keeps its retro muscle essence, but now responds like a machine fine-tuned at every point. No decorative choices — every bolt, every part, every transition has a purpose.
Understanding through detail: It is a bike that does not reveal itself in a single glance, but understanding comes through the details.
Confirmed in use: The experience reveals what the eye only hints at.
The method isn’t part of the process. It is the process. An interpretation pushed to the limit of what we consider correct: BOLT #100.
