Francisco Manen and his workshop, Lord Drake Kustoms (LDK), have just unveiled another bold creation sure to raise eyebrows across the customs world: the new BMW R Springer “Chrome.” This new build is based on a BMW R90 and represents an evolution of the concept behind one of the Spanish builder’s most distinctive creations, the BMW R100 “Survivor” we featured back in 2021.
The new “Chrome” takes that philosophy a step further, incorporating suspension and braking improvements, a more refined design, and a great deal of handcrafted workmanship visible in chrome, leather, and aged brass. Like its predecessor, the BMW R Springer Chrome will be produced as a limited edition. The bike you see here is the first completed, and LDK says it’s currently available for purchase and ready to be shipped anywhere in the world.
The BMW Survivor established a distinctive design direction for Lord Drake Kustoms, reinterpreting classic German boxer motorcycles through an aesthetic that blends vintage, bobber, and old-school influences. The new BMW R Springer Chrome builds on that heritage with a more advanced construction, particularly in two essential areas: braking and suspension.
One of the most significant upgrades is the incorporation of a dual front disc brake system designed to provide improved braking performance compared to the previous configuration. This is complemented by an upgraded suspension system featuring specially developed components and custom-engineered solutions created specifically for this motorcycle.
The starting point for this transformation was a BMW R90 whose iconic boxer engine has been bumped from the original displacement of 900cc to a stouter 1000cc. An extensive number of components were designed, developed, and manufactured in-house. The team fabricated a custom-made subframe designed to accommodate the motorcycle’s new proportions and allow the installation of a rear-end configuration that differs significantly from the original design.
A completely bespoke rear suspension system was developed and manufactured, including a pair of custom shock absorbers — one of the most technically demanding aspects of this transformation.
The solo seat and its leaf-spring mounting system were also developed and built in-house, combining classic aesthetics, functionality, and exclusivity.
At the front, the custom Springer fork stands out as the signature feature of the build. The front braking system also required extensive engineering and fabrication work. In addition to incorporating two brake discs, the front brake master cylinder has been repositioned beneath the fuel tank — a solution that allows the handlebars to maintain an exceptionally clean and minimalist appearance. The installation of inverted brake and clutch levers enhances the motorcycle’s classic, minimalist character.
Other modifications include a custom fuel tank, new lighting and turn signals, and a wide array of additional components adapted or manufactured specifically for this build. LDK says every element has been designed to form part of a cohesive creation in which aesthetics and craftsmanship are just as important as the mechanical engineering itself.
If there is one element that visually defines this motorcycle, it is undoubtedly chrome. Virtually the entire motorcycle has received a spectacular chrome finish, from the fuel tank and bodywork to numerous structural and mechanical components.
However, Lord Drake Kustoms has carefully introduced contrasting finishes to prevent the overall design from becoming overly uniform. The wheels and engine block retain their dark finishes, while the emblems and selected handlebar grip details are crafted from aged brass.
Additionally, leather provides a warm contrast to the polished metal. The seat, fuel tank center panel, and airbox cover feature handcrafted upholstery in rich brown tones, incorporating different textures and decorative stitching that reinforce the motorcycle’s vintage character. This combination of chrome, black, brass, and leather makes the “Chrome” stand out without the need for colorful paintwork or conventional graphics.
Lord Drake Kustoms says the new BMW R Springer Chrome will be produced as a limited edition. This is not a conventional production motorcycle, nor is it a custom build intended for large-scale manufacturing. Its complexity, the extensive number of handcrafted components, and the meticulous labor required to complete each build make each example an exclusive creation.
“The Chrome is aimed at those seeking something beyond a restored classic motorcycle: a unique machine with its own personality and a design that is virtually impossible to overlook.”
Lord Drake Kustoms says they can arrange worldwide shipping, allowing collectors or enthusiasts from virtually any country to acquire this exclusive motorcycle. Interested buyers should contact Lord Drake Kustoms directly for further information regarding pricing, availability, and purchasing conditions.
