The CBR650R is Honda’s successor to the well-loved CBR650F. It debuted in 2018, featuring a 94-hp, 16-valve inline-four engine and twin-spar steel frame. The CBR650 has been called a “sport touring” motorcycle, but it resembles the older CBR series machines — a slightly less aggressive, less expensive alternative to race replica supersports like the CBR600RR, which are evolving to have less and less real-world practicality.

Unfortunately, not all insurance companies see the CBR650 series as any different from their supersport brethren — at least not when it comes to rates. To them, it’s still a sport bike, whose rates can be three times the average. For that reason, it’s absolutely crucial to compare rates and policies from multiple insurers to make sure you don’t get gouged.

CBR650R Insurance Rates

As you know, insurance premiums are calculated from a vast array of variables — make/model/year of bike, rider age and experience, location, accident and theft statistics, and more. For that reason, it’s difficult to estimate what any one rider’s rate will be. That said, we gathered real-world rates from a number of CBR650R owners to give you an idea of what to expect.

  • Male, Colorado, Progressive: $78 per year for liability-only (250/500/100) / $600 per year to add collision/comprehensive.
  • Male, California, 37, Geico, Full Coverage (300/500/300): $2800 / year  (Progressive wanted $4200)
  • Male, Virginia, 44, Geico, Full Coverage: $415 / year (Progressive was $582)
  • Male, Minnesota, 45, Full Coverage: $225 / year
  • Male, Florida, 49, Progressive, Full Coverage: $320 / year
  • Male, State Farm: $370 / year
  • Male, Minnesota, AmFam: $280 / year

As you can see, rates are all over the board, with some riders reporting they saved hundreds of dollars by switching insurers or comparing rates. For this reason, it’s imperative to compare quotes from various insurers in your area to make sure you get the best coverage for your money. Fortunately, we can help.

Honda CBR650R History

The CBR650R is the successor to the CBR650F, itself the evolution of the CBR600F. These bikes were built for riders who wanted the high performance of a middleweight sport bike with the practicality of a true street bike — race-bred machines that could be used for touring and commuting. This CBR650R continues this legacy of the CBR-F series, in that it balances aggression and performance with price and practicality.

“Sportbike-like styling and performance with everyday comfort—that’s the type of experience Honda offers with its 2019 CBR650R.” —Cycle World

Basically, it’s a street-focused sport middleweight — much like the Kawasaki Ninja 650 or Suzuki GSX-S1000F. Says Andy Greaser of Revzilla:

“From the spec sheet and Honda’s positioning, this motorcycle could be a daily rider, a weekend sport-tourer, and an occasional track day machine.”

That said, the new CBR650R is slightly more aggressive than its predecessor, as denoted by the “R” suffix. Many think it’s a response to the struggle of dealerships to sell race replicas, as more and more riders turn to ADV bikes and nakeds. Not surprisingly, there’s also a naked version, the CB650R.
