The Yamaha YZF-R3 — aka the Yamaha “R3” — is the company’s entry-level sport bike, designed to compete with the likes of other 300cc sport bikes like the Honda CBR300 and Kawasaki Ninja 300. The bike offers a 42-hp liquid-cooled inline twin, good for a 0-60 time of less than 5.5 seconds.

Though the R3 is not as expensive to insure as its larger displacement siblings, some insurers may still classify the bike as a “supersport” or “performance bike” — making for expensive rates. For this reason, it’s doubly important to compare quotes from multiple insurers.

Yamaha R3 Insurance Rates

A wealth of variables can and do impact your motorcycle insurance premiums:  make/model of bike, driving record, rider’s age, location, credit. It is very difficult to say what your rates will be, but here are a few examples from R3 riders:

  • Male, 22, California, minimum liability + comprehensive coverage:  $57/month
  • Male, 30s, Pennsylvania, full coverage:  $350/year ($29/month)
  • Male, 30s, New Jersey, full coverage: $600/year ($50/month)

That said, we’ve seen R3 riders with full coverage that ranged from $15 per month (State Farm) to $250 per month (Geico). This is because some companies classify the R3 as a “supersport” since it’s part of the YZF-R family, the same as the Yamaha R6 and R1. For this reason, it’s crucial to compare quotes from various insurers. Fortunately, we can help you do just that!

Yamaha R3 Specifications

Yamaha R3 Insurance

The Yamaha YZF-R3 was introduced in 2015. The bike actually has a 321cc liquid-cooled inline twin, offering 42 horsepower and 22 lb-ft of torque. As expected, most of the power comes higher in the rev range, from 7500 to the 12,500 rpm redline. Cycle World clocked a top speed of 103 mph, giving the bike high marks for ease-of-use and the “sci-fi” dashboard. The front brake of the R3 has been criticized under track conditions, as well as the stock tires — which are long-lasting, but not great for hard lean angles at the track. Still, Cycle World went on to say “the R3 would be a terrific choice for a first trackday.”

Yamaha R3 Coverage Recommendations

Yamaha R3 Insurance

At minimum, most states require a certain among of liability coverage for any motorcycle. The minimum coverage amount varies from state to state. While insuring the bike to the minimum limits is the most inexpensive option, it’s important to remember that liability only covers damages to others if you are at fault in an accident — it does not cover your bike.

What’s more, if you finance your R3, your bank or lender will require you that you carry comprehensive or full coverage.
