Introduced in 2020, the Kawasaki KLX300 (dual-sport) and KLX300SM (supermoto) are evolutions of the KLX250 platform, featuring the liquid-cooled 292cc single-cylinder engine from the KLX300R off-roader, a 6-speed gearbox, and adjustable long-travel suspension — uncommon at this price range.

The KLX300 offers higher performance than the air-cooled KLX230, and reviewers say the adjustable suspension gives the bike an edge over its main rival, the Honda CRF300L, when the going gets dirty:

“For a rider whose off-road aspirations go beyond smooth fire roads and mild two-track, the KLX300 is the more capable bike off the showroom floor.” –Dirt Rider

The KLX300SM, meanwhile, comes standard with dual 17-inch wheels, road tires, larger front and rear disc brakes, and street-tuned suspension.

The base MSRP for the KLX300 models ranges from $5900-$6300, but if you’re a veteran rider, you know that insurance can be a big part of motorcycle ownership cost. Fortunately, the KLX300 and KLX300SM are generally cheaper to insure than sport bikes of similar displacement, but some owners have reported unexpectedly high rates. As always, if you want the best coverage for your money, your best bet is to compare policies from multiple insurers. We can help!

Kawasaki KLX300: Rivals

Kawasaki KLX300: Brief History

In 2020, Kawasaki upgraded their long-standing KLX250 dual-sport with hardware from their KLX300R trail bike, creating the KLX300 dual-sport and KLX300SM supermoto. The bike is neither an entry-level machine nor a full-on street-legal 450 dirt bike:

“Neither a playbike nor a full-on high-performance street-legal dirt bike…the KLX300 falls much closer to the entry-level side of the dual sport bike market. Still, it’s elevated beyond mere beginner-bike status by its capable, adjustable suspension.” –Dirt Rider

The bike weighs just over 300 pounds wet, and according to Dirt Rider‘s dyno testing, it put down 23.4 hp and 15.4 lb-ft of torque at the rear wheel.

The KLX300R is the off-road-only trail bike, while the regular KLX300 is a dual-sport with 21/18″ wheels, and the KLX300SM is a factory supermoto, sporting twin 17″ wheels with larger brakes, lower suspension, and tarmac-oriented tires.

Many riders wonder how the KLX300SM stacks up against the highly popular DR-Z400SM. The DR-Z makes around 10 more hp at the rear wheel, but weighs 20 lbs more and starts at an MSRP of $7600 — roughly $1300 more than the KLX.
