Eastern Spirit: Moto Guzzi California 1100 Café Racer

Moto Guzzi California Cafe RacerEastern Spirit Guzzi: Heavyweight Cruiser to Sport Machine…

Eastern Spirit is a boutique workshop near Warsaw that turns out some of the world’s most striking two-wheeled creations. Their bikes are artisan-built machines that, beyond their streamlined aesthetics, serve as fully functional motorcycles. Few custom shops build motorcycles that go as well as they show.

Moto Guzzi California Cafe RacerWith this latest project, Eastern Spirit’s Sylwester Mateusiak has taken his craftsmanship a step further, transforming a heavy, dubious-looking Moto Guzzi California 1100 cruiser into a minimalist, Art Deco-inspired cafe racer. The hand-shaped aluminum fairings, tank, and covers completely transform the bike, but a keen eye will notice how much care has gone into each small detail — all the brackets, controls, and hardware — to form a cohesive whole.

Moto Guzzi California Cafe RacerAs typical for a cafe racer, the engine is a focal point here. You might assume the big Moto Guzzi motor wouldn’t suit such a build, but a dedicated lightweight exhaust system and thoughtful bodywork design give the bike a very muscular look…and as you’ll see, there’s plenty of power to back up the aesthetics.

Ugly Gosling to Cafe Racer…

The donor is a 2002 Moto Guzzi California 1100, and Sylwester was given free rein to transform the aging Italian cruiser in whatever style he chose. He focused on a sporty cafe racer setup, with the concept evolving through each step of construction.

Sylwester started by rebuilding the original frame. He integrated a light into the newly fabricated rear section — barely visible at first glance — and redesigned the engine mounts to give the bike better overall lines and a sportier rake while keeping the shaft drive in proper alignment.

Next came crafting the aluminum bodywork: fairings, air intakes, tank, tail section, headlight, fenders. Each element was hand-fabricated sequentially for maximum cohesion and fit with the rest of the bike.

What You Don’t See: The Engine Work

Moto Guzzi California Cafe RacerThe fuel-injected Moto Guzzi engine was disassembled completely and all necessary components replaced. This was just the start of powertrain work. Sylwester He refined the oiling system, increasing main-gallery pressure and installing a deeper oil sump to better suit the transverse V-twin’s thermal demands.

Moto Guzzi California Cafe RacerThe crankshaft and piston assembly were modified, the head ported and polished, and custom velocity stacks now feed fresh air to the engine — all for better throttle response and power. A higher-capacity fuel pump and adjustable regulator stabilize fuel pressure under load, allowing more precise tuning while maintaining safe air-fuel ratios.

“The heavy cruiser’s engine turned into a lively toy. I didn’t expect this motor had such potential. Throttle response, torque curve, and solid power blend perfectly with the racing motorcycle character I aimed for. Functionality always matters in my bikes. Even if the huge work on the engine or handling isn’t visible, the new owner gets not just a beautiful toy but exciting, safe rides — the Moto Guzzi performs well over 200 km/h.” -Sylwester Mateusiak

Adding Lightness

Moto Guzzi Cafe RacerBut power alone couldn’t turn the big cruiser into a cafe racer — it had to be lightened. Eastern Spirit’s slimming treatments shed significant weight from the Moto Guzzi. Unnecessary parts were removed, and essentials were swapped for lighter alternatives.

Moto Guzzi Cafe RacerThe classic battery became a lithium-ion unit, paired with a simplified wiring harness. Key weight savers include scratch-built aluminum elements such as footpegs, mounts, lightweight brake and shift levers, custom throttles, project-specific switches, and a custom-built lightweight exhaust system.

The workshop aimed to showcase all the handmade body elements, so the aluminum wasn’t painted — its rawness gives this machine a sleek, futurist look that would look just right in an Art Deco film. Sylwester and crew even mention the 1927 cult film Metropolis as an inspiration.

Moto Guzzi Cafe RacerThe frame and wheel rims were powder-coated and the engine received Sylwester’s custom temperature/fuel/oil-resistant paint, with black pinstripes and red accents echoing along the lines of the bodywork.

As with any work of art, the overall effect might be one of harmony, but there were many toils and challenges along the way.

“I can’t count the man-hours on this bike, but there were many. Things often fail the first or even fifth try, so I restart when unhappy with the result. Concepts change mid-process; sometimes I don’t know how to make it both beautiful and functional. Creative blocks need a break for perspective.” -Sylwester

Moto Guzzi Cafe RacerSylwester has raised the bar yet again, creating a hand-built Guzzi that seems to race right out of a parallel universe where design, performance, and craftsmanship go hand in hand to shape the world around us. We’d like to live in such a world, and this machine brings it to life.

  1. Striking, skeletal, sculptural. The headlight shell makes such a statement.
