The BMW S1000R is the naked version of the famed S1000RR superbike, which debuted in 2010 to global acclaim. That year, Cycle World named it “Best Superbike” and both Motorcyclist and Motorcycle.com named it “Motorcycle of the Year.” The S1000R “hyper roadster” arrived in 2014 sharing the same engine and frame as the RR, though the 999cc inline-four has been optimized for better low end and midrange performance.
While the S1000R has slightly less outright horsepower than the RR — 158 to 165 bhp, depending on the year — and is classed as a “naked” or “standard” rather than a super sport, the big insurers aren’t so easily fooled. The S1000R is one of the most high performance motorcycles money can buy, and insurance rates can be prohibitively high. Fortunately, we can help you find the right coverage at a price you can afford.
BMW S1000R Insurance Rates
It’s important to remember that insurance rates vary widely from rider to rider and company to company. When surveying S1000RR owners, we found that most pay between $600-$1500 annually for insurance, though there are exceptions on both ends of this spectrum.
As expected, the S1000R is slightly less expensive to insure. Here are a few examples from real S1000R owners.
- Male, 24, Allstate: $570 / year
- Male, 26, Dairyland: $750 / year
- Male, 26, Liberty Mutual: $1080 / year
- Male, 55, Dairyland: $637 / year
The experiences of the last owner affirm the importance of comparing rates from a variety of insurers. For full coverage on his 2017 S1000R and a $500 deductible, he received these varied quotes from three leading insurers.
- Progressive: $958 a year
- Geico: $874 a year
- DairyLand: $637 a year
As you can see, he was able to save over $300 per year for the same coverage. The process of comparing quotes from different insurers isn’t too difficult, especially since we’ve streamlined the process. Just enter your zip code to begin.

BMW S1000R History
In 2010, the S1000RR made the largest splash of any bike in the superbike class in years, if not decades. BMW Motorrad had put their engineering prowess behind the creation of an inline-four literbike, and the results were extraordinary. In many tests and reviews, the RR outperformed perennial Japanese superbikes like the Kawasaki ZX-10R, Suzuki GSX-R1000, and Yamaha R1.
It didn’t take long for riders to begin clamoring for a “naked” or “standard” version of the RR, sans fairings and tuned for better performance on the street. In 2014, we got our wish in the form of the S1000R, which shares most of its DNA with the RR.
There have been two major updates since the original S1000R. First came in 2017, and the bike received more power (165 hp), weighed 6.6 lbs less, and boasted updated electronic riding aids. An even more significant update came in 2021 with the Gen 3 model, which included a new lighter weight frame from the 2019 RR, sharper geometry for more agile handling, and a full suite of electronics that included cornering ABS, dynamic traction and wheelie control, launch control, hill start assistance, a pit lane limiter, and “Shift Assistant Pro” for clutchless shifting both up and down the gearbox.
The M1000R also became available, an M package that echoes the M1000RR and includes carbon fiber wheels, lightweight battery, a chassis kit with rear ride height and swingarm pivot adjustment, an M Sport seat, a new “Pro” riding mode, and of course special M-package paint.
In addition, there’s now the S1000XR, which is marketed as an “Adventure Sport Bike.” There’s even an M1000XR version as well.
The S1000R remains one of the most high performance naked bikes on the market, a cutting-edge superbike trimmed out for the street as well as the track.
Full Coverage or Liability?
If you financed your S1000R, the lender will also most certainly require you to carry full coverage insurance, which generally means not just a minimum amount of liability, but also collision, comprehensive, and possibly uninsured/underinsured motorist. Often, if you drop this coverage, the finance company reserves the right to add it on your behalf…and charge you handsomely for it, of course.
Generally, we encourage anyone who can afford so to carry full coverage, whether they financed their bike or bought it outright. Motorcycles are dangerous enough — or rather, other motorists are dangerous to motorcyclists — and it pays to have all the protection you can against careless, negligent, distracted, and/or uninsured drivers.
Of course, if you own your S1000R outright, you can opt for liability-only coverage, and this will be the cheapest option in terms of your monthly or annual premium. That said, it may well cost you more in the end. Often, with a little research, you’ll be surprised at how affordable a full coverage policy can be.
