The Batman Bikes: The Drifter, the Batcycle, and the Catcycle…
The Batman (2022) took a more grounded, gritty approach to the Caped Crusader’s world, and that sensibility carried over to the two-wheeled machines seen on screen. Rather than futuristic or fantastical designs, the film uses motorcycles with more of a real-world feel that suit Gotham’s urban environment and Bruce Wayne’s dual identities.
The Drifter: Bruce Wayne’s Cafe Racer
In The Batman, Bruce Wayne is shown riding a stripped-down, minimalist cafe-style bike that quickly became a fan favorite. Often referred to online as the “Drifter,” this bike obviously isn’t a production motorcycle you can buy off the showroom floor — instead, it’s heavily inspired by real café racer and custom bikes.
The designer, Ash Thorp, who also who also worked on the film’s Batmobile, discussed the influence on his design:
“I am a big fan of cafe racers and instantly knew the approach I would have if I was Bruce and wanted something that was rough around the edges but fast/nimble enough to get the job done… As you can see…we went with the exposed frame concept found on some of my favorite Ducati bikes. Since the entire film is based in a more grounded approach it was key to keep things as realistic as possible with a flare of fantasy to fit the Batman ethos…”

In the end, however, the Drifter’s DNA would be based not on an L-twin Ducati, but a modified Honda CB750 Nighthawk or early-1980s DOHC CB750 platforms. Some sources pin down the model as an ’82 CB750F.

The Drifter bike has inspired any number of custom builds. For instance, our buddy Nolan Goldie — an aerospace engineer — fell in love with the Drifter bike while watching the film. It would serve as the catalyst he needed to devote his engineering prowess to building his first motorcycle completely to his own vision — “Night Fury.”
On screen, the Drifter reflects Bruce Wayne’s undercover, low-profile style: it looks rugged, organic, and functional — not high-tech or slick. It fits the movie’s tone of realism and complements Batman’s detective, street-level approach rather than leaning on sci-fi gadgetry.
The Batcycle: A Unique, Fictional Hero Bike

Because the Batcycle is a Hollywood prop rather than a production model, it wasn’t built from a specific motorcycle make or model; instead, its components and overall shape were crafted to appear believable in action while still feeling intimidating and iconic on camera.
Behind the scenes, however, production photos and filming footage show stunt riders actively piloting the bike during action sequences, indicating that at least one version was fully functional and rideable. As with most major film vehicles, multiple versions were almost certainly built — including a working stunt bike for riding shots and additional non-running or partial builds for close-ups and controlled effects scenes.

For practical filming reasons, industry observers have suggested that the stunt Batcycle may have used a simplified or electric powertrain. This would have allowed filmmakers to accommodate the bike’s unconventional proportions, exposed structure, and aggressive geometry while keeping it reliable, controllable, and safe on set — a common solution for modern movie motorcycles.
Design-wise, the Batcycle draws heavily from real-world performance machines. Its exposed frame, long wheelbase, and muscular stance echo contemporary naked sport bikes and custom streetfighters, while its stripped-down, industrial look reinforces the film’s grounded, raw interpretation of Batman.
The result is a motorcycle that feels plausible and purposeful — less a fantasy gadget, and more a brutal tool built for pursuit, intimidation, and survival.
Catwoman’s “Catcycle” — A BMW R nineT-Inspired Custom
Selina Kyle’s motorcycle in the film — sometimes called the “Catcycle” — was inspired by a real custom build based on the BMW R nineT, a platform known for its air/oil-cooled boxer twin and classic roadster proportions.

For the movie, Japanese custom builder Kaichiroh Kurosu (Cherry’s Company) — whose work we’ve featured here on BikeBound — was commissioned to produce versions of his own customized R nineT design for Catwoman. This build features bespoke bodywork, matte black finishes, hidden lighting, and minimalist fairing lines that match Selina’s agile, noir-leaning aesthetic while preserving the signature boxer engine and scrambler-like stance of the donor bike.

Unlike the Batcycle — which is purely cinematic — the Catcycle is grounded in an actual motorcycle platform that can be experienced in real life, albeit in substantially modified form.
Grit vs Glam…
All three motorcycle designs in The Batman share a key trait: they feel real. Where earlier films leaned into sci-fi spectacle, the 2022 movie embraces a more tactile, street-level aesthetic.
- The Drifter supports Bruce Wayne’s undercover persona — a machine as practical as it is symbolic.
- The Batcycle is a narrative centerpiece, crafted to feel like something Batman himself might build in his workshop.
- The Catcycle brings a grounded, character-specific bike for Selina — a blend of real-world engineering and custom flair.
Together, they reflect the film’s commitment to a gritty, tangible interpretation of Gotham’s machinery, blending motorcycle culture with cinematic world-building in a way that resonates with both film fans and riders alike.
